WACO, Texas (SMU) - The SMU women's tennis team competed in the ITA Texas Regional starting the weekend in College Station and finishing in Waco to be able to use indoor courts during the weekend's heavy rain.
The Mustangs put together a 6-5 singles record led by Vaszilisza Bulgakova's 3-1 record during the tournament. Bulgakova won her first three matches of the tournament, first against Whitney Williams of Abilene Christian University (6-2, 6-4), she followed up that win by beating the 11th seed Kelley Anderson from Baylor after dropping the first set (5-7, 6-4, 10-5), then beat Eliabeth Thoms from UTA (3-6, 6-2, 10-7) but her run was cut short by Katherine Ip of Rice beating Bulgakova 6-4, 6-2 in the round of 16.
Dasha Sharapova also had a good weekend of singles winning her first two matches, first against Jordan Henry from ACU (4-6, 6-1, 10-7) then beating Angeles de los Rios from UTA (7-6, 6-3) before falling to 12th seeded Marie Norris from TCU. Macie Elliott defeated Taryn Strahl from Incarnate Word (6-4, 7-6) in the first round then lost to Solo Zinko from Rice (4-6, 6-3, 11-9). Mary Wright, Ana Perez-Lopez and Yana Erkeeva all dropped their opening round matches.
"We had a great tournament overall," said head coach Kati Gyulai. "We are very pleased with the improvements we made in past couple of weeks. Lisa had an outstanding showing and she is playing at a very high level at this point in the season.
Elliott and Wright advanced to the quarterfinals in doubles play going 3-1 in the tournament, first beating Kaysie Hermsdorf and Williams from ACU 6-3, then topping Maider Martin and Celia Rodriguez from Texas A&M Corpus Christi 6-4 and defeating the sixth seed pair of Anderson and Theresa Van Zyl from Baylor 6-3 before they were finally taken down by Seda Arantekin and Caroline Wegner of TCU 6-2.
"Macie and Mary continue to play excellent doubles," Gyulai said. "We look forward to training these next two weeks before we host our final tournament of the season. "
SMU will host the Red and Blue Challenge at the SMU Tennis Complex starting Nov. 6 through the 8th, which will be their second home tournament of the fall.
