SMU Opens Five Meet Homestand With South Dakota State

DALLAS (SMU) -- The SMU Mustangs return home and open a five-meet homestand starting with the South Dakota State Jackrabbits Friday, Oct. 30 at Sleepy P Ranch. The meet is slated for 10 a.m. CT.

SCOUTING SOUTH DAKOTA STATE: The South Dakota State Jackrabbits are currently 1-2 this season with losses against South Carolina and Kansas State. The victory came mid-October against Minnesota-Crookston. The Jackrabbits are coming off of a 6-9 record, where they failed to claim any road meets last season. South Dakota State saw the beginning of postseason at the United Equestrian Conference (UEC) tournament but fell to both Fresno State and New Mexico State. South Dakota State sports a upperclassmen-heavy roster, with 22-of-32 riders are in their senior and junior years. Three jackrabbits were named NCEA All-Americans, including sophomore Mariah Wright who was named first team in reining after posting a 9-3-1 record.
ALL-TIME AGAINST THE JACKRABBITS: This will be the seventh time in program history that these two teams face off. SMU holds a 5-1 advantage over South Dakota State all-time. The two forces saw each other twice last season, once in Dallas and once in Brookings, South Dakota. The two split the decisions, the first claimed by SMU, 11-9, with the second in favor of the Jackrabbits, 9-9 (1445/1496.5-1445/1508.5). SMU has won all three meetings in Dallas.
LAST TIME OUT : The No. 10 SMU Mustangs traveled to Las Cruces, New Mexico and took on the ninth-ranked Aggies. The Mustangs came up short and were on the losing side of a 9-9 draw. Coming down to raw scores, NMSU just edged SMU, 1501.24-1479.25 for the victory. The Mustangs continued its hunt seat success, claiming the English disciplines, 6-3. Sylvia de Toledo led the way for SMU in the hunt seat events, claiming victories in both the equitation on the flats and over fences. De Toledo picked up the over fences MOP, her first of the year. Schaefer Raposa continued her early season dominance, picking up her fourth MOP of the year, posting a 83-57 victory on the flats. In the western events, NMSU evened the meet with a 3-2 event score in horsemanship and a 3-1 reining score.
WELCOME ASSISTANT COACH MEGAN SOUTHAM: Megan Southam joins the SMU equestrian coaching staff for her first year in 2015-16. A former National champion at the University of Georgia, Southam gained valuable experience working and training with some of the best in the world. During her riding career at Georgia, Southam helped lead the Bulldogs to an NCEA National Championship in 2014 as well as a winning the 2015 Southeastern Conference Championship while serving as a team captain. Southam competed in equitation on the flat and over fences at Georgia.
