Nicholas Earns American Swimmer Of The Week Honors

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (American/SMU) - Junior Tara-Lynn Nicholas helped the 21st-ranked Mustangs to a pair of dual victories over Houston and Rice over the weekend to secure American Athletic Conference Swimmer of the Week honors, league officials announced on Tuesday. This is the third honor of the season for Mustang swimmers, as classmate Maddie Hoch picked up back-to-back honors earlier this season.
Nicholas, an All-American from Pietermaritzburg, South Africa, swept breaststroke events in both of SMU's events over the weekend, continuing to stay under the NCAA 'B' standard in both the 100 and 200 distances in the event at Houston. She was also the only athlete to post splits under 29 seconds in the 200-yard medley relay at both events.
Nicholas is a three-time All-American, earning honors in the 100 breast in her first two seasons, as well as the 400 medley relay at the 2015 NCAA Championship. Internationally, she has reached the 'B' qualification standard for next year's Rio Games.
Classmate Marne Erasmus also earned weekly honors, hers from CollegeSwimming.com. Also a native of South Africa, Erasmus was named The American Swimmer of the Week by the publication. The butterfly specialist won all three events she competed in for the stroke over the weekend (100 2x, 200 1x), and currently holds the nation's second fastest time in the 100 at 52.60.
Dual action continues for the Mustangs this weekend with events at LSU and Tulane. Saturday's event with the Tigers begins at 12 p.m. CT, while AAC action with the Green Wave is slated for 10 a.m. on Sunday. Check SMUMustangs.com and the women's swimming social media pages for ways to follow.
