The No. 18 SMU Mustangs (7-0) play the first two games of the Continental Tire Las Vegas Classic. SMU hosts Nicholls (3-5) on Wednesday at 7 p.m. and Hampton (4-3) on Thursday at 6 p.m. The Mustangs improved to 7-0 with an 82-58 win against Michigan on Dec. 8. SMU is 5-0 at home this season and is 39-3 at home since the start of the 2013-14 season.
SMU is averaging 81.9 points while shooting 53.1 percent (3rd NCAA) with eight Mustangs averaging at least 6.7 points with four averaging more than 10 points (Nic Moore 15.0, Keith Frazier 13.4, Jordan Tolbert 12.3, Ben Moore 11.2, Markus Kennedy 9.9, Shake Milton 8.7, Sterling Brown 8.4, Jarrey Foster 6.7). The Mustangs have had at least four double-digit scorers in five of seven games, including five in double figures against Yale and New Hampshire. The offense is averaging 19.7 assists (7th NCAA) and has had at least 20 assists four times this season.
The Mustangs have outrebounded six of seven opponents and have a +14.1 rebound margin (4th NCAA). Six Mustangs are averaging at least 3.9 rebounds, led by Tolbert at 8.1 and Ben Moore at 7.8. Two others are at at least five boards per game (Sterling Brown 5.6, Markus Kennedy 5.0). Three times this season, SMU has had five players with at least five rebounds in the same game.
The Mustangs are No. 18 this week in the AP Top 25, moving up one spot from the Dec. 7 poll. SMU was 22nd on Nov. 30 after being tied for 25th on Nov. 23. SMU was receiving votes in the first two polls. Last season, SMU spent nine weeks in the AP and USA Today Top 25, finishing No. 18 in the AP and receiving votes in the USA Today Coaches Poll.
SMU finished 27-7 last season, winning The American regular season and tournament championships en route to the NCAA Tournament. SMU won 27 games in each of the past two seasons and has a 61-17 mark since the start of the 2013-14 season. The Mustangs were picked to repeat as AAC champions in the league's preseason coaches' poll. Nic Moore was tabbed to repeat as AAC Player of the Year, while he and Markus Kennedy were unanimously selected to the preseason All-AAC first team. Moore was also named to the Wooden Award Preseason Top 50 for the second straight year and to the Naismith Award Watch List for the first time. Kennedy is on the Karl Malone Award Watch List. Semi Ojeleye is a nominee for the Allstate NABC Good Works Team. Jordan Tolbert was named the AAC Player of the Week (12/14) and Shake Milton was the AAC Rookie of the Week (11/16). Nic Moore was named to the AAC Weekly Honor Roll (12/7).
UP NEXT: The Mustangs face Kent State in the Continental Tire Las Vegas Classic at The Orleans Arena on Dec. 22 (7 p.m. CT/5 p.m, PT) followed by Penn State or Colorado on Dec. 23. SMU then opens American Athletic Conference play at Tulsa on Dec. 29 (4 p.m.) before hosting USF on Jan. 2 (6:30 p.m.).
LAST GAME (W, 82-58 vs. Michigan on Dec. 8): DALLAS (AP) -- Jordan Tolbert got most of his 23 points on rim-rattling slam dunks and had nine rebounds as No. 19 SMU stayed undefeated with an 82-58 victory over Michigan on Tuesday night. Nic Moore had 15 points, including back-to-back 3-pointers before assisting on consecutive dunks by Tolbert during a 13-2 run late in the first half that put the Mustangs (7-0) in total control. Tolbert had nine dunks and finished 11-of-12 shooting. Keith Frazier also had 15 points for SMU, off to its best start since winning its first 10 games in 1997-98. Ben Moore and Sterling Brown each grabbed 10 rebounds. The impressive start for the Mustangs comes in a season when they are banned from postseason play and coach Larry Brown still has two games left on a season-starting, nine-game suspension because of NCAA sanctions. Duncan Robinson and Muhammad-Ali Abdur-Rahkman each scored 15 points for Michigan (6-3), which had won four in a row since consecutive losses to Xavier and Connecticut in November. Nic Moore had two 3s in 28 seconds to start the 13-2 run before halftime, the second 3 coming on a fast break after a turnover when Sterling Brown penetrated and passed back to Moore at the top of the key. Ricky Doyle had a slam for the Wolverines before two more highlight plays by Tolbert in 33 seconds, the later on an alley-oop pass from Nic Moore that put SMU up 31-20. Tolbert again had consecutive slams for SMU baskets midway through the second half, first on another pass from Moore and then a two-handed slam with 11:16 left for a 59-45 lead. Michigan's leading scorer Caris LeVert had only five points, 14 below his season average.

KENT STATE (W, 83-76 vs. Kent State on Dec. 6, 1997): DALLAS (Star-Telegram): The Mustangs withstood an early second-half 15-3 run by Kent to cruise to an 83-76 victory, adding to their best start, 6-0, in 10 seasons. The Mustangs got another strong game from Jeryl Sasser, who led all scorers with 20 points, and a clutch performance from Stephen Woods, who made two 3-pointers to keep the Flashes at Bay. After Kent pulled to within one on two separate occasions with just over 10 minutes remaining, SMU got timely baskets from both Sasser and Jay Poerner to extend their lead and seal the victory.
Markus Kennedy NAMED TO KARL MALONE WATCH LIST: Markus Kennedy was one of 20 players named to the 2016 Karl Malone Award Watch List, the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame announced on Oct. 13. The accolade recognizes the top power forward in Division I men's college basketball. In mid-February, the watch list will be narrowed to the top 10. In March, five finalists will be selected. The winner will be announced on Friday, April 8.
Nic Moore NAMED TO WOODEN AWARD PRESEASON TOP 50 & NAISMITH TROPHY WATCH LIST: Nic Moore was named to the John R. Wooden Award Preseason Top 50 on Nov. 17. It is the second straight season Moore has been on the preseason list. The accolade is for college basketball's top player. A midseason list of 25 will be selected in early January followed by the top 20 in early February. Fifteen players will be submitted to the voters in March. The Wooden Award All-American Team will be announced the week of the "Elite Eight" and the winner on April 8. He was named to the Naismith Trophy Watch List by the Atlanta Tipoff Club on Dec. 2. Named in honor of Dr. James Naismith, inventor of the game of basketball, the Naismith Trophy presented by AT&T recognizes the top Men's College Basketball Players of the Year.
Semi Ojeleye NOMINATED FOR ALLSTATE NABC GOOD WORKS TEAM: Semi Ojeleye (shem-ee o-juh-lay) is a nominee for the Allstate NABC Good Works Team, an award that highlights student-athletes who have shown dedication to community service and altruism in their communities. The junior is an advocate for the "I Have a Dream Foundation", which is a local group that focuses on creating an environment to help children develop a healthy self-confidence, a passion for learning and a sense of community for lifelong service to others by providing mentors, educational opportunities, after school programming and recreational programming. The program offers tutoring, life skills and lifelong mentoring by providing children with home and school visits to monitor academic and social progress as well as daily nutrition assistance. The junior is a psychology major and posts a 3.714 cumulative grade-point-average. A former Parade Magazine National Player of the Year, Ojeleye played in 23 games at Duke before transferring to SMU in January of 2015.
HALL OF FAME HEAD COACH Larry Brown: He was named head men's basketball coach at SMU on April 19, 2012. He is the only head coach to win both an NCAA title (Kansas 1988) and an NBA Championship (Detroit 2004). Brown was enshrined in the Basketball Hall of Fame as a coach on Sept. 27, 2002. He is in his 41st season as a head coach and 11th at the NCAA level. He has an overall record of 1723-1226 when combining his head coaching marks from the NBA, the ABA, the NCAA and USA Basketball. His collegiate record is 246-95 (69-34 at SMU) with two conference championships (1986, 2015) and three conference tournament titles (1984, 1986, 2015). His teams have been to the NCAA tournament eight times including three Final Fours (1980, 1986, 1988) and the 1988 NCAA title. At SMU, he led the Mustangs to the 2014 NIT title game before reaching the 2015 NCAA.

ASSOCIATE HEAD COACH Tim Jankovich: Tim Jankovich is in his 33rd season as a collegiate coach, and his fourth season as associate head coach at SMU where he has helped SMU to a 76-34 mark. The Mustangs have won 27 games in each of the past two seasons, going 27-7 in 2014-15 while claiming The American regular season and tournament titles en route to the NCAA Tournament. This is the 10th season he has served as the leader of a Division I program, including five as head coach at Illinois State (2007-12) and four at North Texas (1993-97). As a head coach, he is 164-121 (.575) [7-0 at SMU]. That includes a 104-64 mark at ISU where his teams recorded four top-three finishes in the Missouri Valley, reached the conference tournament final three times and earned four NIT bids. MOORE GOLDEN: In the summer of 2015, Nic Moore helped Team USA to the gold medal at the World University Games in Gwangju, South Korea (July 3-14). Bill Self (Kansas) coached the USA with a mostly Kansas roster (10 of 12 players). Moore started all eight games of the tournament, averaging 6.8 points, 2.5 assists, 3.0 rebounds and 1.9 steals in 27.5 minutes. In the gold-medal game against Germany, he played a tournament-high 47 minutes with 7 points, 6 rebounds, 3 steals and 2 assists in a 2OT 84-77 victory. Moore had a steal and 2 FTs to give the USA an 80-77 lead with a minute left in the 2nd OT.
INTERNATIONAL EXPERIENCE FOR THE MUSTANGS: In addition to Nic Moore winning a gold medal with Team USA at the World University Games, seven other Mustangs earned international experience. Ben Moore, Sterling Brown, Semi Ojeleye and Ben Emelogu II played for U.S. teams in the Global Sports Academy Goodwill Tour. The tour was August 6-14 with games in Belgium, England, Germany and the Netherlands. Jay Duncan, SMU's Director of Operations, was the head coach for the roster that included Ojeleye and Emelogu. Both teams went 5-0. It was the second straight summer Moore and Brown played together on the GSA tour. Jordan Tolbert and Keith Frazier played for USA East Coast on a tour of games in France and Italy. The three-game trip included matchups with the Chinese and Nigerian national teams.
MAY I ASSIST YOU: SMU is averaging 19.7 assists, which leads the AAC (7th NCAA). The Mustangs have at least 20 assists 4 times this season, including 26 vs. Brown 11/29. In 2014-15, SMU led The American with 15.4 assists per game (24th NCAA). SMU had 20 or more assists in five times in 2014-15.

TROPHY CASE: In SMU's three seasons under Larry Brown, the Mustangs have added three items to the trophy case. SMU won the 2015 American Athletic Conference regular season and tournament titles. In 2014, SMU earned a No. 1 seed in the NIT, eventually reaching the championship game.
