The SMU women's basketball team returns to Moody Coliseum Saturday to host New Mexico at 5 p.m. CT. The contest marks the final home game before the Mustangs open a five-game road slate, Monday at No. 11 Texas A&M.
SCOUTING SMU
The Mustangs are 3-3 this season, and are averaging 69 points per game. Alicia Froling is averaging 14.3 points per game and grabbing an average of 9.7 rebounds, while sophomore transfer McKenzie Adams is scoring 13.7 points per game. SMU has five players averaging at least nine points per game. As a team, the Mustangs are shooting 40.8 percent from the field, led by Stephanie Collins' 53.7 shooting percentage.
LAST TIME OUT
McKenzie Adams scored a team-high 16 points, and SMU out-scored North Texas 21-13 in the fourth quarter, but the effort was not enough as the SMU women's basketball team fell, 60-57, at North Texas Tuesday night in The Super Pit.
ABOUT NEW MEXICO
The Lobos are 4-3 after losing at UTEP, 70-62 in their last game. New Mexico finished 21-13 last season, managing five wins on opponent floors. This season, the Lobos are out-scoring opponents 492-445 and averaging 70.3 points per game. New Mexico has three players averaging at least nine points per game, led by senior forward Khadijah Shumpert and sophomore guard Cherise Beynon. Shumpert leads the team averaging 13.9 points and 7.3 rebounds, while Beynon is averaging 10.4 points per game, with a team-high 25 assists.
Series History: This will be the fifth meeting between the two teams who are knotted at 2-2 all-time. The last time the two teams met was in 2010 at the WNIT in Albuquerque, New Mexico where the Lobos ousted the Mustangs, 66-51.
UP NEXT
SMU plays at No. 11 Texas A&M Monday at 11 a.m. in College Station, Texas. The Aggies are 5-1, and have two games at the Tom Weston Invitational in Hawaii left on the schedule before the matchup with SMU. The game can be viewed on the SEC Network.
Series History: This will be the 43rd meeting between the two teams, with Texas A&M holding a 25-17 all-time advantage over SMU. The Aggies have claimed the last four meetings against the Mustangs, edging SMU 70-62 in Dallas last season.
OFFENSIVE PRODUCTION
The Mustangs are averaging 69 points per game and have a +8.0 scoring margin over opponents. SMU has eclipsed 70 points in four of its six games this season after reaching 70 points just twice last season with a season-high 77 points against Florida A&M. Five Mustangs are scoring at least nine points per game, with three averaging double figures, led by Alicia Froling's 14.2 points per game. Transfer McKenzie Adams is scoring 13.7 points per game, while Stephanie Collins is scoring 10.3 points per game, shooting a team high 53.7 percent from the field.
FINISHING STRONG
The Mustangs have out-scored opponents 217-189 in the second half this season. In the fourth quarter alone, SMU is out-scoring opponents, 126-92 and averaging 21 points. Alicia Froling and Stephanie Collins are each averaging 3.5 points in the final 10 minutes.
SMU THANKSGIVING CLASSIC MVP
McKenzie Adams earned the SMU Thanksgiving Classic MVP award, finishing the tournament with 39 points, 12 assists and seven rebounds. The newcomer also finished the weekend, shooting 46.4 percent (13-of-28) from the field and 88.9 percent (8-of-9) from the free throw line. The sophomore transfer from Arkansas scored a career-high 24 points against Kansas, making four 3-pointers and six free throws. Adams was named to the American Athletic Conference weekly honor roll.
FROLING'S EARLY SEASON DOMINANCE
Sophomore forward Alicia Froling has scored at least 10 points in five of six games this season, and in seven of the past eight overall dating back to March 2 of last season. The Queensland, Australia, native has eight career double-doubles, including three this season. She scored 26 points with 14 rebounds against TCU, one shy of matching her career high in both categories. Froling is averaging 14.3 points and 9.7 rebounds through six games this year, both team highs.
HEATING UP
McKenzie Adams has posted four straight double-digit scoring games and is averaging 13.7 points per game. The sophomore transfer from Arkansas, started the streak Nov. 21 against then-No. 18 Arizona State with 16 points. The 5-9 guard scored a career-high 24 points against Kansas, making four 3-pointers and six free throws. Adams is shooting 94.1 percent from the free throw line, and 34.1 percent from the field after six games.
STANDOUT NEWCOMERS
Junior guard Ashley Gibson and freshman Dai'ja Thomas are making names for themselves among first year players. Gibson, a transfer from Butler CC, is averaging 10.4 points per game and shooting 43.9 percent from the field, 40.9 percent from behind the arc. Thomas, The American Freshman of the Week in week one, is averaging 4.2 points per game shooting 45.0 percent from the field and averaging 3.8 rebounds.
Stephanie Collins
Stephanie Collins joined the Mustangs after the first semester last season and played in 20 games, starting eight. She reached double digits twice, scoring a season-high 13 points at East Carolina. The 6-5 center had 25 blocks, recording four in a game three times. Collins tied the SMU single-game blocks record with six against Arizona State, matching Sarah Davis and Kendall Shead, who each had six blocks March 3, 2006, against Tulane. It was the first time an SMU player had at least five blocks since Alice Severin had five against UCF March 7, 2009. Collins is averaging 10.3 points per game, shooting a team-high 53.7 percent from the field, and grabs an average of 4.8 rebounds per game.
LONE SENIOR
Gabrielle Wilkins, the lone senior, is averaging 9.4 points per game, shooting 48.6 percent from the field. The 5-9 guard averaged 9.5 points and 4.5 rebounds during the SMU Thanksgiving Classic, while shooting 50 percent from the field. The Garland, Texas, native has recorded a season-high 11 points twice this season, scoring 11 points with four steals against TCU, before posting 11 points with three assists against Kansas.
BLOCKS RECORD
With Alicia Froling setting a single-season record with 54 blocks and Stephanie Collins recording 25 in 20 games, the Mustangs went on to set a program record with 160 blocks as a team. Raven Short and Destynee Hives-McCray, who are no longer on the team, each had 20 blocks, while Keely Froling and Gabrielle Wilkins both reached double figures. The Mustangs had six blocks in the opener and recorded five blocks against TCU.
FRESHMAN LEADER
Alicia Froling was the only Mustang to average double figures last season, leading the team with 11.5 points per game. She became the first freshman to lead the Mustangs in scoring since Janielle Dodds averaged 14.1 points per game during the 2004-05 season. Dodds averaged 15.1 points for her career, and is the all-time scoring leader at SMU with 1,861 career points. Froling also set a single- season record with 54 blocks, breaking the mark of 53 set by Sarah Davis in 2005-06. Davis also held the freshman record, posting 40 blocks in 2002-03.
INTERNATIONAL EXPERIENCE
Alicia Froling represented Australia at the 2015 FIBA U19 Women's World Championships in Russia, winning a Bronze medal with the team, her second career medal at the World Championships. A native of Queensland, Australia, Froling averaged 8.1 points per game, reaching double figures twice, including a tournament-high 19 points during group play. She also averaged 6.9 rebounds per game, and shot just under 70 percent from the free throw line. Stephanie Collins also represented Australia at the 2015 World University Games.
Morgan Bolton
Morgan Bolton led the team with 73 assists in her first season on the floor with the Mustangs. The junior guard averaged 5.9 points per game and shot 71 percent from the free throw line. Bolton was the top scorer in three games, including a season-high 13 points against Tulane and again at Memphis. The transfer from Arkansas-Little Rock also had a season-high seven assists twice, against UTEP and Florida A&M.
A MISSING PIECE
SMU will be without Kiara Perry this season as the junior sits out with a redshirt due to a back injury. As a sophomore, Perry led the team with 39 steals and averaged 7.9 points per game. The guard shot 33 percent from the field and 64 percent from the free throw line.
25TH SEASON
Rhonda Rompola is in her 25th season as head coach of the Mustangs. The former player who spent eight years as an assistant at SMU before being named head coach, has amassed over 400 wins in 24 seasons. She led SMU to 13 postseason appearances, including seven NCAA Tournament berths. SMU has won at least 20 games in nine seasons, with three regular-season conference championships and two conference tournament championships.
