ORLANDO, Fla. - The SMU women's golf team finished its first round of the spring in 15th place (+9, 297) at the UCF Challenge at Eagle Creek Golf Club. Evelyn Dole had the best individual round, as she is tied for 14th place after carding a one-under, par 71.
Dole had three birdies on the day (two on the front nine) and was two-under on par 3's. This is just the second tournament at SMU for the sophomore transfer, however it was the best round in her collegiate career. She is five strokes off the leader, Vanderbilt's Kendall Martindale (-6).
"Evelyn played quite well," head coach Jeanne Sutherland said. "She came out with great energy and it translated well to each shot."
Jenny Haglund and Alexandra Rossi improved their scores in the second half of their rounds. Haglund was two-over before shooting one-under on the back nine to card one-over. She is tied for 31st. Rossi was four-over but shot two-under, including three birdies, on the back nine to card two-over.
Jennifer Park and Lindsey McCurdy both shot seven-over.
"The whole team shot better the back nine," Sutherland said. "We still left a lot of shots out there. We need to use today as a learning lesson. It is still early in the season and we have time to improve."
Vanderbilt leads the field at 11-under. Play resumes Monday morning. Live scoring can be found here.
