ORLANDO, Fla. - The SMU women's golf team had a seven-stroke improvement from their opening round to remain in 15th place at the UCF Challenge on Monday. Junior Jenny Haglund carded a two-under par 70 to pace the Mustangs at the Eagle Creek Golf Club.
"We played better today," head coach Jeanne Sutherland said. "Our troubles on the green continued, so we need to improve in that area. I was happy with our attitude. Everyone kept patient, even when things were not going our way, and gave 100 percent."
Through two rounds, Haglund has shot par or better on 33 holes. Her lone blemish on the day was a bogey on the 11th hole. Haglund was two-under on the back nine to seal her fourth under-par round this season. She is tied for 26th place at one-under.
Alexandra Rossi shot even-par to remain two-over for the tournament. Rossi began her round with a birdie on 10 but gave back the shot with a bogey on the 14th. She then birdied the 16th hole to finish the front nine at one-under par. On the back nine, a bogey on the 5th hole pushed her round even.
Lindsey McCurdy shot six strokes better than her opening round by carding a one-over par 73. Similarly, Jennifer Park improved from her first round by four swings with a three-over performance.
Rounding out the day for SMU was Evelyn Dole who carded four-over. Dole had two birdies in her round. She is three-over for the tournament and in a tie for 48th.
"Our plan is to get better after each round," Sutherland said. "There is a lot of golf ahead of us. We look forward to finishing the event on a high note."
The UCF Challenge concludes Tuesday. Virginia leads the field at 19-under. There is a four-way tie atop the individual leader board as Daniela Darquea (Miami), Lauren Coughlin (Virginia), Chonlada Chayanun (Iowa State) and Silvia Garces (Tulane) are eight-under. Live scoring can be found here.
