MESA, Ariz. (SMU) - The SMU Mustangs women's golf team ended the first round at the Clover Cup in sixth place, posting a team score of 308 on Friday.
SMU was led by junior Jenny Haglund, who shot a 1-under 71 to end the first day in fourth place individually. Haglund had three birdies, including two over a three-hole stretch between holes 13-15, to sit just two shots off the individual overall lead.
"She was real solid and steady," SMU head coach Jeanne Sutherland said of Haglund. "With the conditions as rough as they were to start, she was really solid."
The windy conditions helped contribute to a slow start for the Mustangs.
"We were tight and the wind was blowing and we didn't look like we were ready to compete," Sutherland said. "After the winds died down, we played well on the back nine."
Junior Alexandra Rossi shot a 6-over 78 for SMU's second best score of the day. Her round included birdies on holes 9 and 16. Sophomore Evelyn Dole also carded two birdies and finished at 7-over par. Senior Jennifer Park gave SMU its fourth counting score, shooting an 8-over 80. Sophomore Lindsey McCurdy is also representing SMU at the event, posting a 10-over 82 in the first round.
Overall, SMU is just one stroke back of American Athletic Conference foe East Carolina in fifth, and two shots behind Florida International for fourth. Arizona State is leading the tournament at 7-over, while host Notre Dame is one shot behind in second. Arizona State's Monica Vaughn and Oklahoma's Hannah Wood lead event individually at 3-under par.
"This team never gives up, so you can expect them to bounce back tomorrow and post lower scores," Sutherland said.
SMU will tee off for round two tomorrow starting at 9:45 a.m. CT/8:45 a.m. PT, grouped with East Carolina and Florida International.
