DALLAS (SMU) - The SMU rowing team won all three Varsity 8 events to defeat Creighton and the University of Central Oklahoma in windy conditions on Saturday morning at White Rock Lake.
"I'm really happy with their performance today," Head Coach Doug Wright said. "One of the things we've been talking about in practice is being intentional with everything that we do. Our work in the weight room, our classroom work, staying on top of our studies allows us to stay focused on what our goals are out here in the water. One of the things I saw come to fruition on the race course is everyone's intentional practice leading up to today. The results show how focused everybody was."
The Mustangs finished over 16 seconds ahead of second place UCO in 1V8+ action, with SMU finishing in 7:53.1 for the victory. The Bronchos clocked in at 8:19.7 and Creighton followed in third at 8:27.0.
"We practice in weather like this so on days like this it doesn't come as a surprise," Wright said. "We like flat water, we want to row on flat water. We don't want any other conditions affecting us, but we do practice in those variables to prepare for days like today."
In the race prior, the Ponies picked up their first victory of the day in the 2V8+ edging out UCO, once again, but this time in a closer contested race. SMU crossed the line in 8:29.4, while UCO posted an 8:33.2 and Creighton finished in 8:39.8.
The final eights race featured an SMU victory over a pair of boats from Creighton. This was the largest margin of victory on the day for SMU as they finished the event in 8:36.7 and Creighton's crews turned in finishes of 9:12.8 and 10:48.8.
Creighton dominated in Varsity 4 action, winning both the 1st and 2nd events. In 1st Varsity, UCO was second followed by the Mustangs in third, and in 2nd Varsity SMU placed second.
"I really don't know how reflective the times are of our true ability," Wright said. "I will say that the times in the 1V and 2V 8's in a 20 mile per hour head wind were pretty good from a historical perspective in those conditions."
This is really what the early part of the season is about, collecting all these times and then looking at them as a whole."
