REIGNING AAC CHAMPIONS
The Mustangs are looking to repeat as American Athletic Conference Champions after claiming the title last year in the conference's inaugural season. Seven Mustangs captured individual titles, four of which return to this year's squad. Stephanie Kalu (100-meter), Agnes Sjöström (5,000-meter) and Rayann Chin (Discus) all earned one title, while Lucija Cvitanovic won two (Javelin, Heptathlon). Cvitanovic also took home Most Outstanding Field Performer honors.
INDOOR RECAP
SMU finished third at the American Athletic Conference Indoor Championship at the New Balance Track & Field Center in New York City. The Mustangs finished with 83 points, 3.5 points behind second-place UCF (86.5) and 25 points behind champion Connecticut (108). "The effort at a championship meet is what matters and we had a championship effort. Unfortunately, we came up a little short," said head coach Dave Wollman. "The first step to success is the failure you just experienced, so we will use this to motivate ourselves for the outdoor."
Senior Rayann Chin earned the Mustangs' lone gold medal, finishing first in the weight throw. Chin also added a bronze in the shot put, right behind teammate Tochi Nlemchi, who placed second. Overall, eight Mustangs earned medals.
