DOVER, Del. - The eighth-ranked SMU equestrian team concluded the regular season with an 11-8 victory at Delaware State on Friday at the Gambler's Choice Equestrian Center. The Mustangs improved its record to 6-6 overall behind MOP efforts from Schaefer Raposa and Morgan Redwine.
"I am really proud of this team," head coach Carol Gwin said. "This was an excellent road win. It was a solid way to finish the regular season and now we can build on it for the conference championship and nationals."
The Mustangs took the hunt seat 6-4. SMU won equitation over fences 4-1 and had two points in equitation on the flat.
Raposa earned her MOP in over fences behind an 86-78 triumph over Carlin Savage. Her score was the highest in the discipline. Alex Butterworth (82), Emma Roberts (80) and Sylvia de Toledo (79) all won their respective head-to-head matchups as well. Overall, the Ponies outscored Delaware State 365-239 in over fences.
The two SMU points on the flat came from Leina King and Roberts. King prevailed 77-73 over Caroline Schock while Roberts won 66-64 over Savage.
The Mustangs earned two points in horsemanship and three in reining for a 5-4 win in the western.
In horsemanship, Redwine rode a 74.5 to defeat Elizabeth Koons' 72. That ride earned her the MOP honors. Kristen Schramm won 71-68.5 over Alexis Gratowski for the other SMU point.
The three points in reining came from Keagan Snively, Courtney Line and Jaclyn White. Snively won 70-63 against Brooke Moore; Line's 68.5 topped Kali Voshell's 65; and White defeated Brianna Fedorkowicz 63-62.
"Winning on the road is important for us," Gwin said. "We will only ride in neutral site competitions from now on. Our rides have continued to get better and hopefully we can carry our momentum into the postseason."
SMU now shifts its attention to the United Conference Championship. The two-day event begins on March 27 in Fresno, California.
