FRESNO, Calif. - The SMU equestrian team defeated New Mexico State, 10-6, at the Student Horse Center on Friday to advance to the United Equestrian Conference Championship. The Mustangs face Fresno State for the league title on Saturday at 11 a.m. CT/9 a.m. PT.

"We did well," head coach Carol Gwin said. "We rode with confidence and had a lot of fun. It was a good day."

The Ponies (7-6) won both the hunt seat and western by a 5-3 score.

"I am very happy that both the hunt and western teams contributed," Gwin said. "It really shows our growth this season. This is the type of balance we have been working on. Emma and Morgan each had two points which is a major highlight for us."

SMU took three of the four points in equitation over fences. Emma Roberts scored a team-best 167 (85, 82) in her victory over Beth Solomon (162.5: 83-79.5). Sylvia de Toledo won 157.5 (79, 78.5) to defeat Remington Willkie 112 (50, 62). Schaefer Raposa's 163 (82, 81) bettered Amber Tassel's 140 (71, 69).

Greer Hindle and Roberts had the two Mustang points in equitation on the flat to split with the Aggies. Hindle posted a 138 (79, 59) to beat Julie Frey's129 (63, 66). Roberts' 137 (70, 67) was five points better than Shannon Dooley's 132 (69, 63).

Hannah McCain and Morgan Redwine were winners in their horsemanship head-to-head matchup. McCain had SMU's highest score in the discipline (143.5: 71.5, 72) to best Hallie Padilla (136.5: 66.5, 70). Redwine (143: 71.5, 71.5) was triumphant over Clarissa Edgerton (139: 68.5,70.5).

Like over fences, SMU had three points in reining. Casey Bibbs (66.5, 66) prevailed 132.5-131 over Kimmy Ferrante (66, 65). Courtney Line tallied 138.5 (70.5, 68) for the win over Marissa Bartmann (137: 69, 68). Redwine (140: 70, 70) won her second western point as she was victorious against Bryn Larson (138: 68.5, 69.5).

"We have a great group out here supporting us," Gwin said. "Tomorrow will be tough because we are in Fresno using their horses in their venue. It is basically a road meet but we are looking forward to the challenge. We will recover tonight and try to keep it simple tomorrow."

NOTES
Scores for each ride were a combination of two judges. The Fresno State and South Dakota State was ran simultaneously, which extended the length of the meet.

Schaefer Raposa's equitation over fences head-to-head matchup against Amber Tassel was a rematch of the Pin Oak Collegiate Invitational Championship. At Pin Oak, Raposa defeated Amber Tassel 90-82 for the title. Raposa is the first Mustang to win Pin Oak since Emily Gardner in 2011.
