FRESNO, Calif. -- The SMU women's equestrian team fell to Fresno State, 12-4, in the United Equestrian Conference Championship on Saturday at the Student Horse Center.
The Mustangs split the hunt seat, 4-4, with the Bulldogs but Fresno State pulled away by winning the western 8-0.
"You can take the loss negatively or take it as a chance to improve," head coach Carol Gwin said. "I expect this team to pick the second option to improve. We are disappointed to finish second but we know what we need to work on when we return to Dallas in preparation for Nationals."
SMU went 3-1 in equitation over fences. Emma Roberts totaled 159 (74, 85) to handle Kylina Chalack's 157 (77, 80). Schaefer Raposa earned MOP honors for her 165 (81, 84) to beat Kara Spicer's 160 (80, 80). Sylvia de Toledo (75, 76), who was named the UEC's over fences rider of the year, was responsible for the third point as she won 151-148 over Randi Pemrehn (73, 75).
The Mustangs final point in the meet came in equitation on the flat. Roberts (66, 79) prevailed 147-145 over Chalack (69, 76). Roberts had a perfect championship by going 4-0 in her four hunt seat head-to-head matchups.
"I am very proud of Emma," Gwin said. "It was also an honor to see Sylvia earn over fences rider of the year. Schaefer has a few MOPs this weekend too. We had some terrific performances."
Despite not earning a point in the western, SMU was close on a few matchups. In horsemanship, Morgan Redwine scored a 145.5 (73.5, 72) to fall short to Kristen McKillop's 147 (74.5, 72.5). In reining, Courtney Line (68, 67.5) came up just shy 135.5-137 to Taylor Brown (68, 69).
SMU's season concludes with the NCEA National Championship. The three-day event begins April 16 at the Extraco Events Center in Waco.
