COMPLETE EVENT RESULTS
SAN DIEGO (SMU) -- The SMU rowing team finished up competition at the San Diego Crew Classic in Mission Bay on Sunday. Three of its four crews advanced to finals in their respective events including the Varsity 8+ crew, which placed fifth in the Petite Final.
"We raced hard this weekend, but didn't get the results I was expecting," Head Coach Doug Wright said. "We had a great week of practice, but need to do a better job of putting our race execution together. San Diego is a tough race course if you don't get the right lane draw. The kind of speed we showed at practice is hard to match when the conditions are different on race day."
The Ponies clocked a 7:21.13 in the Women's Collegiate Varsity race and were less than eight seconds off leader Loyola Marymount's pace. SMU finished over seven seconds ahead of American Athletic Conference opponent San Diego State in the final.
SMU's 2nd Varsity 8+ squad wrapped up competition on day one in the Women's Collegiate 2V 3rd Final and placed fourth with a time of 7:45.28. The time was an improvement from the group's preliminary performance, which was 7:53.97.
The Mustang Novice 8+ crew advanced to the Novice Grand Final after a preliminary time of 7:53.65, but did not register a place due to a disqualification.
SMU's final crew in action, the Varsity 4+, competed on Saturday crossing the finish line in 9:07.50 for fifth place in heat A of the Women's Collegiate Varsity 4+ event.
"We will regroup and focus on next weekend," Wright said. "It's early in the season and we have a lot of racing. I am very excited about our team's mindset this year. They love to race and are intent on reaching our goals."
SMU returns to the water when it hosts Kansas on Saturday at White Rock Lake. The event is scheduled to begin at 9 am CT. Check SMUMustangs.com, `like' the Mustangs on Facebook (/SMURowing) and `follow' on Twitter (@SMURowing) for live results information.
