DALLAS -- The SMU women's tennis team lost to 27th-ranked TCU, 6-1, on Saturday afternoon at the Ann and Brad Brookshire Family Pavilion at the SMU Tennis Complex.
"I thought the effort was very good. We had our chances," said head coach Kati Gyulai. "I just thought that TCU played the bigger points a little bit better than we did."
TCU (7-5) earned the doubles point with wins in the No. 1 and No. 3 matches. Seda Arantekin and Stefanie Tan (No. 1) defeated Vaszilisza Bulgakova and Dasha Sharapova, 6-3, before Sofiko Kadzhaya and Simona Parajova (No. 3) clinched it, defeating Yana Erkeeva and Mary Wright, 6-4.
SMU's (7-3) Hristina Dishkova and Holly Verner improved to 18-4 on the year by topping Palina Dubavets and Alexix Pereira, 6-4, in No. 2 doubles.
In singles, Parajova, ranked 48th in the country, defeated Anna Kate Anderson, 6-2, 6-2, in the No. 2 match. Pereira then extended TCU's lead to 3-0, beating Wright, 6-3, 6-2, in the No. 6 slot.
Erkeeva recorded the lone point for the Mustangs, earning a straight-set victory over Dubavets in No. 4 singles, 6-3, 6-4.
Tan then clinched the match for the Horned Frogs, defeating Dishkova in three sets, 6-0, 4-6, 6-0, in the No. 1 match.
Kadzhaya (No. 3) and Arantekin (No. 5) also earned singles wins for TCU. Kadzhaya defeated Sharapova, 6-4, 3-6, 6-3, and Arantekin topped Bulgakova, 6-2, 5-7, 6-1.
"Now, we have to make the transition to playing outdoor tennis," said Gyulai about the team's upcoming road trip to Hawaii. "I think the team is ready and we're pretty fresh. We have a longer break after these matches, so we have to throw everything we have at these two matches."
On Wednesday, SMU takes on No. 60 Hawaii at 3 p.m. HT/7 p.m. CT, before playing Cal State Fullerton on at 10 a.m. HT/2 a.m. CT.
