LAS VEGAS, Nev. - The SMU Mustangs men's golf team closed out day one at the Southern Highlands Collegiate Masters on Monday, with junior Austin Smotherman leading the team at even par. SMU is in 15th overall on the leaderboard.
Smotherman had five birdies on Monday, including two straight on holes 3 and 4. Sophomore Andrew Buchanan finished the day with a 2-over (74), while junior Bryson Dechambeau closed at 3-over par (75).
Junior Ryan Burgess, playing in his first tournament of the 2014-15 season, gave SMU its fourth counting score at 6-over par (78).
"The boys are disappointed in their play," SMU head coach Jason Enloe stated. "They will bounce back, we just need to play better."
No. 7 Texas leads the tournament after day one. All 15 teams in the event are ranked in the GolfStat Top 50, and 10 of the squads are ranked in the first Bushnell/GolfWeek Coaches Poll of the spring.
SMU will tee off beginning at 11:20 a.m. CT/9:20 a.m. PT tomorrow grouped with TCU and No. 24 Oklahoma.
