McKINNEY, Texas (SMU) --- Charles Beasley, a member of the SMU's 1965, 1966 and 1967 Southwest Conference Championship men's basketball teams, passed away on April 11 in McKinney at the age of 69.
The Mustangs went 54-25 in Beasley's three years on the varsity (1964-67), winning three straight SWC Championships. SMU earned an NCAA Tournament bid in each of those seasons, reaching the regional final in 1967. Beasley averaged 15.4 points and 4.5 rebounds in his career, earning All-SWC First Team honors as a junior and senior. His 1,204 points ranked third at SMU at the end of his career.
In his senior season, SMU went 20-6 with a 12-2 SWC record. Beasley was second on the team in scoring (15.0) and rebounding (4.7) as the Mustangs won the SWC by four games. SMU reached the NCAA Midwest Regional Final after defeating No. 2 Louisville 83-81 in the semifinal. The Mustangs fell 83-75 to No. 7 Houston in the regional title game.
In his junior season, SMU went 17-9 with an 11-3 SWC record. The Mustangs started 1-3 in league play before running off 10 straight victories to claim the conference title by one game over Texas A&M. Beasley earned All-SWC honors after finishing second on the team in scoring (18.7) and third in rebounding (5.7)
As a sophomore, Beasley was third in scoring (12.8) as SMU went 17-10 overall and claimed a share of the SWC title with a 10-4 league mark. The Mustangs defeated Texas 80-78 in the SWC playoff game in Waco to earn the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. It was SMU's first bid since 1957.
Beasley arrived on the Hilltop from Shreveport, Louisiana, helping the freshman squad to a 9-3 record in 1963-64.After his SMU career, he played four seasons in the ABA beginning with the Dallas Chaparrals in 1967.
