MESA, Ariz. -- SMU swimmer Christian Scherubl competed in the Mesa Grand Prix this weekend, swimming against some of the world's top competition at the Skyline Aquatic Center in Mesa, Arizona.
Scherubl, a freshman from Austria, swam in three freestyle events, facing off against Olympians Michael Phelps and Ryan Lochte. He swam in the 100-meter, 200-meter and 400-meter freestyle events, qualifying for the finals in all three events.
The freshman's top finish came on Friday in the 200-meter freestyle, when he finished second in the B Final with a time of 1:51.37. Scherubl then touched the wall first in the D Final of the 100-meter (51.76) and placed fifth in the C Final of the 400-meter (4:05.20).
Scherubl's performance in Mesa capped off a great first season on the Hilltop. He set two school records (200 free, 500 free) and was named the American Athletic Conference's Most Outstanding Swimmer after winning three individual gold medals at the conference championship.
