Mustangs Ascend Into Second Place At The American Championship

Round Two Results | Round Three Tee Times | Live Scores

PALM COAST, Fla. -- The SMU women's golf team had the lowest team score on the second day of the American Athletic Conference Championship to catapult the Mustangs into a tie for second place at the Hammock Beach Resort and Golf Club on Monday. The Mustangs, one-under in the second round, are tied with Houston at 10-over through 36-holes, trailing UCF (+2) by eight strokes.

"We were fortunate to have a good pairing, little wind and soft greens," head coach Jeanne Sutherland said. "The team played well and had a great attitude. This is a great and unique event that is team oriented. We know anything can happen and this is a course where you can make up eight strokes."

Alexandra Rossi carded a round of one-under par 71 to move into a tie atop the player leaderboard with UCF's Monifa Sealy. Rossi was even-par or better on 17 of 18 holes on Tuesday, including two birdies, to be three-under overall.

With five birdies, Jenny Haglund jumped seven spots on the leaderboard to be tied for third. She had the lowest score for a Mustang with a three-under par 69 on day two to sit one-under overall.

"Alex and Jenny are focused on the team winning rather than individual stuff," Sutherland said. "They were great today but the whole group is working towards the team championship. If we play like we can, the individual stuff will come with it."

Jennifer Park improved by seven strokes from her first round with a one-over par 73. Park had four birdies to move into a tie for 28th.

Both Lindsey McCurdy and Evelyn Dole carded rounds of two-over par 74. McCurdy, tied for 18th, was one-under at the midway point but three bogeys on the back nine pushed her score over-par. Dole improved by 11 strokes from her first round.

The Mustangs will play with UCF and Houston in the final round on Tuesday. The first group will tee off at 8:50 a.m. ET/7:50 a.m. CT.

"Tomorrow will be fun," Sutherland said. "We know we can improve and we have the talent to win. We have a lot of reasons to be motivated for tomorrow."
