PALM COAST, Fla. -- Junior Jenny Haglund nearly repeated as the American Athletic Conference Championship individual medalist as she tied for the lead on the final round but fell in a one-hole playoff to UCF's Monifa Sealy for runner-up honors. The Mustangs posted the lowest team score for the second straight day at Hammock Beach Resport's Ocean Course to also earn a runner-up finish.
SMU finished the 54-hole championship at 12-over, eight strokes off UCF (+4). The Mustangs pulled within a pair of strokes a few times during the final round to challenge for the title.
"We played UCF even on the back nine," head coach Jeanne Sutherland said. "It was a nice challenge and we played championship golf for most of the tournament. I am proud of the group and it is always nice to bring home a trophy."
Haglund, the 2014 champion, birdied two of the final three holes to send the individual medalist title into a playoff. After Sealy made par, Haglund missed her putt to extend the playoff. The top 10 finish is the seventh of the year for the Karlstad, Sweden, native.
"Jenny had a great tournament," Sutherland complimented. "She stayed within reach and competed at a high level. She had her opportunites and stayed composed."
Taking eighth, Alexandra Rossi also snagged a top 10 finish with a 77 on the final round for an overall score of two-over. Rossi had five birdies on the day to bring her total for the tournament to 12, the second most of the event.
"Alex also had a nice tournament," Sutherland said. "She played fantastic golf for 52 holes, just a few got away from her. She has a lot to be proud of."
Four birdies highlighted the third round for sophomore Lindsey McCurdy. She had the second lowest round for the Mustangs at one-under par 71 to bring her tournament score to five-over. The Kyle, Texas, native brought home her fifth top 20 finish of the season.
Senior Jennifer Park carded her best round of the event by going even-par 72. Park had 14 pars and a pair of birdies in her final league tournament round. She finished the week at eight-over, good for a share of 17th place.
"Lindsey and Jennifer both did so well playing under pressure for us," Sutherland said. "They didn't know where we were in the standings until the end and they came through with solid rounds."
Sophomore Evelyn Dole closed her first conference championship as a Mustang at 20-over after shooting a 79 in the third round.
SMU now waits for the NCAA Division I Women's Golf Selection Show that airs April 27 at 6 p.m. CT on the Golf Channel.
"We are looking forward to the NCAA's," Sutherland said. "We hope to peak at the right time. This championship was great preparation going forward. This group knows how to handle themselves and compete."
