FRANKLIN, Tenn. (SMU) -- The SMU Mustangs jumped three positions on the leaderboard during the final day at the Mason Rudolph Championship, closing the tournament in seventh place behind a 2-under 69 from junior Ryan Burgess on Sunday at the Vanderbilt Legends Club.

Burgess' round was the best of his season. The Rancho Santa Fe, California, native carded five birdies, including three over his final five holes, to improve by nine strokes over his second round.

"The guys played much better today," head coach Jason Enloe said. "I was very happy to see Ryan play so well, and Bryson (DeChambeau) had a good round going but faltered at the end. It was just kind of an off week for the guys. Now it's time to go home for a few days of rest and practice before we are back at it next weekend."

SMU's team score of 291 (7-over) was the sixth-best total in the field on Sunday. Freshman Ben Baxter carded the squad's second-best score, finish 2-over with a 73. Sophomore Andrew Buchanan carded a 3-over 74, while DeChambeau went 2-under on the front nine and was as high as sixth on the individual leaderboard before a rough stretch on the back nine dropped him to a 4-over 75 on the day. DeChambeau was SMU's highest-finishing player in the event, tying for 17th. Both Baxter and Buchanan tied for 21st, while Burgess tied for 37th and junior Austin Smotherman tied for 54th after tallying a 76 for the final round.

Host Vanderbilt won the tournament by 11 strokes over defending national champion Alabama and Georgia Tech. Kennesaw State and East Tennessee State rounded out the top five, while Vanderbilt's Matthias Schwab and Hunter Stewart split the individual championship.

SMU will next hit the course in Columbus, Ohio, for the Robert Kepler Invitational hosted by Ohio State. The two-day tournament begins Saturday.
