Nicol Picks Up Pair Of Medals At Pan Am Games

TORONTO (SMU) - Rachel Nicol helped lead host country Canada to a second-place finish in the medal count by earning a pair at the 2015 Pan American Games July 14-18. The Lethbridge, Alberta, native picked up a silver and bronze in her two races.
Nicol, who recently completed her eligibility as a three-time NCAA All-American with the Mustangs, swam a 1:07.91 in the finals of the 100-meter breaststroke for her first medal of the games. The bronze was the first medal for a Mustang since Corrie Clark picked up a pair of silvers in 2003 at the Santo Domingo games. In the qualifying heats, Nicol posted a lifetime best 1:07.10.
On Saturday evening she made it two-for-two in medals as she helped Canada's 4x100 medley relay team to a runner-up finish, swimming the breaststroke leg of the event. The team improved its time from preliminary action by nearly four seconds finishing behind only the team from the United States.
Isabella Arcila also competed at the Games, advancing to the Consolation Final in each of her three individual events. She earned her highest placement in the 100-meter freestyle, touching the wall second in 56.37. In the 50-meter distance, the Colombian placed fourth in the B Final. She also earned a third place finish in the Consolation Final of the 100-meter backstroke.
In relay action, the team from Colombia placed fifth in the 4x100 freestyle posting a National Record time of 3:47.40.
Julian Fletcher, who represented Bermuda in Toronto, finished fifth in the Consolation Final of the 100-meter breaststroke at 1:03.60 for his highest placement, and narrowly missed out on Finals in the 200-meter distance.
