Six Mustangs To Compete At FINA World Championships

DALLAS (SMU) – Two current members of the SMU swimming and diving program, as well as four alumni will represent their respective countries at the 16th FINA World Championships in Kazan, Russia, Aug. 2-9 held at the Kazan Arena Stadium. The event kicked off July 24 and offers six different sports in addition to swimming, including diving, synchronized swimming, water polo, open water swimming and high diving.
Preliminary heats begin at approximately 9:30 a.m. MSK/1:30 a.m. CT, with semifinals and finals starting at approximately 5:32 p.m. MSK/9:32 p.m. CT.
Swimming coverage will begin on Aug. 2 at 12:30 p.m. CT on NBC. Coverage continues on Universal Sports from Aug. 3-7 starting at 9:30 a.m. Aug. 8-9 coverage begins at 2 p.m. back on NBC. UniversalSports.com will also live stream all events airing on Universal Sports Network, and NBC coverage can be found on NBC Sports Live Extra.
Individual Event Information:
Isabella Arcila (Colombia)
Events: 50 free, 100 free, 4x100 free relay, 4x200 free relay, 4x100 mixed medley relay
Most recently, Arcila competed at the Pan Am Games for Colombia and helped the 4x100 free relay team to a fifth place finish and National Record performance. She also competed in the Consolation Final of all three of her events, including the 50 and 100 free, as well as the 100 back.
During her time with the Mustangs, Arcila earned one individual All-America honor, and was part of six All-American relay teams. She also holds, or is a part of, four school standards and accounted for 17 conference championships and nine conference records.
Julian Fletcher (Bermuda)
Events: 100 breast, 200 breast
Fletcher was one of three Mustang alums to compete at the Pan American Games, serving as a breaststroke specialist for Bermuda. In the 100-meter distance, Fletcher finished fifth in the Consolation Final clocking a 1:03.60. In the 200, he swam a 2:20.97, but did not qualify for event finals. Fletcher is currently the Bermudian National Record holder in each of the distances.
Rachel Nicol (Canada)
Events: 50 breast, 100 breast, 4x100 medley relay
Along with Arcila and Fletcher, Nicol also competed at the Pan Am Games, winning a silver and bronze medal for host country Canada. In the 100 breast, Nicol posted a 1:07.10 in preliminary action to win her heat and meet the ‘A' qualification standard for the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio. For her efforts, she took home bronze, and went on to win silver as part of Canada's 4x100 medley relay.
Nicol has three All-America honors and three school records at SMU, as well as eight conference championships and 13 all-league honors.
Nina Rangelova (Bulgaria)
Events: 50 free, 100 free, 200 free
Rangelova went eight-for-eight in finals of the Bulgarian National Championships, setting or tying three National Records. A summer ago, Rangelova went 10-for-10 at the event. Rangelova was a seven-time All-American with the Mustangs, and a member of Bulgaria's 2012 Olympic team.
Matea Samardzic (Croatia)
Events: 100 back, 200 back
Samardzic, a junior transfer who will begin her first season with the Ponies in the fall, is a two-time Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Most Outstanding Swimmer of the Championship, winning the 500 free and 100 and 200 backstrokes in 2015. This summer, Samardzic won all three backstroke events at the Speedo Sectionals in Orlando.
Christian Scherubl (Austria)
Events: 4x200 free relay
Scherubl was one of six Mustangs who competed at the World University Games in Gwangju, South Korea, at the beginning of July. The Austrian competed in the 50, 100 and 200 freestyles. He currently holds SMU records in both the 200- and 500-yard distances. At the 2015 American Athletic Conference Championship, Scherubl earned Most Outstanding Swimmer honors and earned seven all-league awards.
