Mustangs Defeat Baylor On Tiebreaker In Exhibition

Sept. 19, 2015

WACO, Texas (SMU) - The SMU Equestrian team defeated Baylor in an exhibition Friday in Waco, Texas, out-scoring the Bears to win the tiebreaker after each team rode to 11 points.

The Mustangs led the first half 7-3 taking 4 points in the Reining on the western side and 3 points over fences on the Hunt Seat side. Sophomores Keagan Snively and Casey Bibbs, as well as junior Kelsey Karanges and Freshman Olivia Paluka, all scored points for SMU. Bibbs also was awarded the MOP of Reining for the event.

"We are excited about the depth we have in the reining this year. Coach (Trista) Adkins is doing a great job with these girls thus far, and has a good deal of talent to work with," head coach Carol Gwin stated.

In Equitation over Fences, freshmen Nora Gray and Lexi Murphy, and junior Alexis Graves, each won points for the Mustangs as SMU defeated the Baylor squad 3-2.

"I put in a lot of newcomers here to see the talent I had, and they produced. I was proud of all five girls who rode mistake free," Gwin explained.

In Horsemanship, Baylor went 4-0-1 against the Mustangs, with freshman Michaela Dinger picking up the tie.

"We just made some simple mistakes here that can be cleaned up for our upcoming meet against TCU. We have the talent, just need to fix a few things," Gwin continued.

SMU picked up points necessary for the win during the Equitation on the Flat competition, with freshmen Nora Gray and Laura Weske receiving points, as well as junior Julia Fowler and sophomore Hayley Banas.

"All of the flat riders rode amazing in my mind," Gwin stated. "We had a lot of new faces in the arena, and the losses were really close. I am excited about the season, and looking forward to seeing what this group can do this year."

With the event originally scheduled for Saturday, the Mustangs found themselves scrambling to get to Waco.

"We had a travel glitch since we were prepared to compete in the scrimmage on Saturday instead of Friday," Gwin explained. "I got a call from (Baylor) head coach Ellen White Friday at noon, only to discover that they were expecting us Friday instead of Saturday."

"Our team captains called all of the girls. We got a bus and got on the road with just two hours of notice. Baylor was great about waiting on us and hosting the meet, and I'm pleased with the way our team performed," Gwin concluded.

The Mustangs open the regular season Thursday against TCU at Sleepy P Ranch at 10 a.m. SMU also competes at Oklahoma State Saturday, Sept. 26.
