DALLAS (SMU) - The SMU women's tennis team beat the McNeese State Cowgirls 5-2 at the SMU Tennis Complex. The Mustangs won the first four points of the match to clinch the win before finishing the night at the 5-2 final.
The doubles point was won after No. 1 pair Vaszilisza Bulgakova and Hristina Dishkova made quick work of Klaudia Gawlik and Anastasija Trubich of McNeese, winning 6-1. Bulgakova and Dishkova have only teamed up three times in doubles before this season and think as the season goes on, the better they'll become as a pair.
"Because we've been practicing and playing together more and more, we're getting more used to each other as a team," Bulgakova said.
The No. 2 pair of Dasha Sharapova and Ana Perez-Lopez won their match 6-3 over McNeese's Giovanna Fioretti and Julia Kral to clinch the point for the Mustangs. Macie Elliott and Mary Wright's match against Sarah Jurakova and Hannah Brett went unfinished at a 4-3 McNeese lead.
In singles play, Wright was the first to earn a point for SMU for the second straight match, this time from the No. 6 position, beating Charoline Erlandsson 6-4, 6-2. Then Bulgakova (No. 2) won her match 6-1, 7-5 over Kral to put SMU up 3-0.
Dishkova's (No. 1) singles match against Gawlik went back and forth in the first set before Gawlik won 6-4. After that it was all Dishkova as she won the second set 6-3 and the third set 6-1 to clinch the match for the Mustangs with a 4-0 lead.
"In the first set, my opponent was doing a really good job of mixing things up and keeping me off balance," Dishkova said. "But once I started to get used to it and playing more offensive the match really turned in my favor."
The match finished up with Sharapova topping Sarah Jurakova 7-5, 6-4 from the No. 4 spot. Then Perez-Lopez (No. 5) and Yana Erkeeva (No. 3) each dropped their match in a tiebreak, Perez-Lopez in two sets to Brett 6-4, 7-6 (7) and Erkeeva to Fioretti in a third set super tiebreak 4-6, 7-5, 10-8.
