Samardzic Wins High Point Award At SMU Classic

Complete Results

LEWISVILLE, Texas (SMU) – Junior Matea Samardzic led the SMU women's swimming and diving team winning the Swimming High Point award at the SMU Classic Friday and Saturday in Lewisville, Texas. The 2016 Olympian scored the most points as an individual swimmer, combining placements from individual and relay events.

"There was fantastic competition here this weekend, with impressive swimming by all," head coach Steve Collins said of the Classic. "It was a great start to the season and for Matea to win the High Point award with such extremely fast swimming is extraordinary."

Michigan won the Classic in their first trip to the event, narrowly edging out Louisville with 325 points. The Cardinals posted a final score of 324. USC was third at 303, UCLA fourth with 266.5, SMU fifth at 237 and Miami finished sixth scoring 184.5.

Samardzic posted the fastest time in the country in the 200-yard backstroke, clocking a 1:53.69 for the win and meet record. She also posted a provisional time in the 200-yard individual medley, finishing second in a time of 1:59.43.

Other Mustangs competing in Championship Finals included Maddie Hoch (500 free), Tara-Lynn Nicholas (200 breast), Vicky Cunningham (100 free) and Marne Erasmus (200 fly). Cunningham's time in the 100 free was an NCAA B cut at 49.58.

Sophomore diver Brooke Pospichal placed sixth on the 3 meter today with a six-round 237.60.

"Overall, I was very pleased with how Brook performed in her first event. She did a great job," head diving coach Jim Stillson said. "She was very consistent and solid on the 1 meter with no misses. For where we are in the season she did a very good job and we're going to keep working on the basics and increasing her degree of difficulty in the next few months. Looking ahead, I don't think that will be a problem for her at all."

In relay action, SMU placed fourth in the 200-yard medley relay and fifth in the 200-yard freestyle relay.

The Mustangs are back in action Oct. 28 for their first dual meet of the season. SMU hosts American Athletic Conference opponent Houston at 7 p.m. CT in Southlake, Texas. Find live results at SMUMustangs.com.
