DALLAS (SMU) - As part of its Lettermen's Weekend festivities, SMU will honor the 1966 SMU Football team at halftime of the Oct. 22 game versus Houston.
Hayden Fry lifted SMU back to national prominence in 1966, when the Mustangs were ranked ninth in the nation and won their first conference championship in 18 years, going 6-1 in Southwest Conference action. On Sept. 17, the Mustangs defeated Illinois for the program's 250th victory, and finished with an 8-3 record overall, including a 5-0 mark at home. SMU closed out the year with an appearance in the 1966 Cotton Bowl.
Seven Mustangs earned all-conference accolades that season, including legendary wide receiver Jerry LeVias and 1966 All-American John LaGrone. Jerry Griffin, Ron Medlen, Billy Bob Stewart, Lynn Thornhill and Mac White also made the list. LeVias led the team in receiving yards that season with 420 yards on 18 catches and seven touchdowns, while White rushed for 606 yards and six touchdowns.
