DALLAS (SMU)— The SMU men's soccer team beat Cincinnati, 1-0, Sunday night at Westcott Field. The Mustangs improve to 6-8-0 overall and 2-3 in American Athletic Conference play, while the Bearcats fall to 8-5-1 overall and 3-2-0 in the AAC.
Junior defender
Jordan Cano's first-half goal lead the Mustangs to the victory, clinching SMU's second consecutive conference win. After a corner kick from
Bryce Clark in the 35th minute, Cano headed the ball past Cincinnati goalkeeper Pedro Diaz to net the game-winning goal. It was the second goal of the season for Cano, who also scored in the 4-0 victory over Memphis last Saturday.
The Mustangs outshot the Bearcats, 17-7, in a strong offensive attack. Junior midfielder
Mauro Cichero led the team with four shots and two on goal. Sophomore midfielder
Emil Cuello came off the bench to add three shots, while senior defender
Taylor Curtis and Cano contributed two shots each.
SMU's defense preserved the second consecutive shutout of conference play. Senior
Michael King, freshman
Eddie Munjoma, Curtis and Cano anchored the backline that only allowed three shots on goal for the entire match.
Junior goalkeeper
Michael Nelson tallied three saves in 90 minutes of play to record back-to-back shutouts. He now holds three clean slates this year.
The Mustangs return to Westcott Field for Senior Night and the last home match of the season next Saturday night to host USF. The senior class will be honored at 6:45 p.m. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
