DALLAS (SMU) – Johnasia Cash becomes the third high school student-athlete to sign with first-year head coach
Travis Mays to play women's basketball at SMU. The 6-2 forward from McKeesport, Pa., averaged 22 points and 11 rebounds as a junior at McKeesport High School.
She was named the
Pittsburgh Post-Gazette Player of the Week on Feb. 4, 2016 after scoring 27 points with 12 rebounds in a win against Franklin Regional. Cash, the cousin of WNBA star Swin Cash, was named to the
Pittsburgh Post-Gazette's All-Bradley team in 2016 after leading all South Xtra players with 21 points per game.
"I've been coaching for 12 years, and there isn't anyone I've coached or coached against who plays as tenacious and as hard as Johnasia," McKeesport head coach Eric Smith said. "She is relentless during games, and expects her teammates to play at the highest level. She makes the players around her better."
Smith continued, "I know Johnasia is very excited about the opportunity to play at the next level, and excited about going to SMU."
Cash led the Tigers to the playoffs as a sophomore and again as a junior, and the four-year starter earned all-conference honors each of the previous three seasons. She also played volleyball and ran track at McKeesport High School. Her talent is not limited to athletics, as Cash participated in musicals and dance as well. She played on the Western Pennsylvania Bruins AAU team, leading the Bruins to the championship in the adidas Guantlet Series.
"Johnasia is a very athletic forward who is very active. She will bring plenty of energy to the Mustangs with a huge personality," explained Mays. "One of the pleasures of recruiting is when you are excited for a young lady to join your program, and she and her family are equally excited to join your program."
Cash joins Dallas native Morgan Smith and Houston standout Ariana Whitfield in the 2017 freshman class. The Texas duo signed with the Mustangs on Nov. 9.
