DALLAS (SMU) - The SMU rowing team is set to compete at the 2016 Tulsa Fall Invitational in Catoosa, Oklahoma at the Verdigris River this weekend.
"We are looking forward to the last competition this fall," head coach
Doug Wright said. "Putting our long distance work this fall to the test is always fun and challenging. We will also put our small boat skills to the test on Friday, which helps the rowers really connect with the mechanics of 'how to move a boat'. Using those principles in a racing situation is key to their development."
The teams will compete in a series of 4500 meter head to head events. Head style racing refers to events that involve shotgun starts and teams racing against the clock on courses approximately three miles long.
The Mustangs earned several top finishes at the first two fall competitions this season, the Head of the Oklahoma on Oct. 2 and the Head of the Brazos on Oct. 9.
At the Head of the Oklahoma, SMU dominated the Open 1x competition, claiming five of the top-10 finishes in the race. SMU claimed second (19:04.44), fourth (19:59.58), fifth (20:02.07), sixth (20:19.09) and seventh (20:37.68). SMU secured a third-place finish in the Open 2x, clocking 17:15.90.
Alyssa Sands finished in fifth-place posting an 18:05.44 final time and
Paige Papesch grabbed sixth-place with a time of 18:15.00.
At the Head of the Brazos, the Mustangs posted a commanding first place finish in the Open 2x and Novice 8+.
Lauren Vanek and Moody took first in the Open 2x (19:23.02), with the closest competitor crossing the finish line 1:16.00 later. Two Mustang boats competed in the Novice 8+. The first finished with a time of 20:45.40, the second finished at 22:46.72, earning fifth place.
The Tulsa Fall Invitational is the Mustangs' last event of the fall season. SMU hosts Creighton in a dual meet at White Rock Lake on March 11 to open the spring season.
