Wilfong Nominated for Allstate NABC Good Works Team

INDIANAPOLIS (NABC/SMU) - SMU's Jonathan Wilfong is a nominee for the 2017 Allstate National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Good Works Team, a distinguished award that highlights student-athletes who have shown dedication to community service and altruism in their communities.
In its fifth year, the award recognizes players at all levels of college basketball who have made outstanding contributions in the areas of volunteerism and civic involvement.
The senior from Memphis, Tenn., is a co-founder of Coaching for Literacy (coachingforliteracy.org), an organization that helps fund literacy programs focused on helping elementary and middle school students. The mission of Coaching for Literacy is to increase awareness about the number of people in America who are functionally or totally illiterate and the social problems associated with illiteracy.
By partnering with sports teams from across the country for a unique game-day experience, Coaching for Literacy raises money to supports effective local literacy programs and schools focused on educating elementary and middle school students.
Wilfong is in his fourth season at SMU, with 35 games played, including a start at Memphis. He currently holds a 43.5 percent career shooting-percentage. The Mustangs finished 25-5 with a 16-1 record at Moody Coliseum in 2015-16. SMU opened the season with a program-best 18-0 start, and was the last undefeated team in the country. Wilfong was also member of the 2014-15 American Athletic Conference regular-season and tournament title teams that earned an NCAA Tournament berth.
Athletic departments and sports information directors across the country nominated the 181 NABC and the 97 WBCA student-athletes for the prestigious honor. Two special voting panels, headlined by former Duke University basketball athlete, two-time NCAA champion and seven-time NBA All-Star Grant Hill, and former Notre Dame basketball star, two-time Nancy Lieberman Award winner and current WNBA player Skylar Diggins, will select 10-member teams from both the NABC and WBCA, comprised of five student-athletes from the NCAA Division I level and five student-athletes from Divisions II, III and the NAIA. The final roster of 20 award recipients will be unveiled in February.

The Mustangs play at Boise State tonight at 8 p.m. CT. SMU begins a six-game homestand against CSU Bakersfield on Friday at 7 p.m. The home stretch includes Delaware State (Sunday), TCU (December 7), McNeese State (December 14), Stanford (December 19) and Albany (December 20). The Mustangs then start American Athletic Conference at Memphis on December 27.
