Four Mustangs To Attend USA Volleyball National Team Tryout

Feb. 19, 2016

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (SMU/USA Volleyball) – Four Mustangs will attend the USA Volleyball Women's National Team Open Tryouts Feb. 19-21. AVCA All-America Honorable Mention award winners Morgan Heise and Janelle Giordano, who have each spent a summer with one of USA Volleyball's collegiate programs, as well as Katie Hegarty and Lauren Mills will take part in the tryout.

In all, 231 student-athletes representing 88 colleges and universities from across the country will be competing for spots on the U.S. Women's National Team, the U.S. Collegiate National Team program and for the U.S. Women's Junior National Team for athletes born in 1996 or 1997.

U.S. Women's National Team Head Coach Karch Kiraly and his staff will direct the entire tryout process, which can be viewed with an online video stream at http://bit.ly/USAVwnttryout. The tryout will involve four sessions with three waves per session. Friday's first session goes from 2-8 p.m. MT with Queen of the Court competitions, while Saturday's sessions are at 8 a.m. (focus on serve/receive and individual work) and 2 p.m. (middle-centered and out-of-system focus). The tryout concludes on Sunday at 8 a.m. with tournament style play, along with 16-18 athletes selected by the staff to participate in a "USA" training session.

Heise earned the first national award of her career after setting an SMU and American Athletic Conference record with 721 digs, second most in the NCAA this year, and was third in the country with 6.06 digs per set, also a school and conference single-season record. The junior from Hempstead, Texas, was named conference Libero of the Year for the second straight season.

Giordano finished second in the NCAA with an SMU and American Athletic Conference record 188 total blocks. She also set a new school and conference mark with 1.58 blocks per set, fifth in the nation. The junior from Keller, Texas, set an SMU record with a .393 attack percentage, scoring 300 kills. Giordano was named to the all-conference first team, earning the third all-conference award of her career.

Hegarty scored 273 kills from the right side for the Mustangs, hitting .227 during her first year as a starter. The 6-2 opposite hitter also posted 83 blocks with 44 digs. She attended the tryout in 2015 and was selected as an alternate. Lauren Mills, who is attending the tryout for the first time, had 59 kills and 213 digs, playing primarily in the back row while backing up a pair of senior all-conference outside hitters. The 6-0 outside hitter also had 32 service aces.

The Mustangs finished the season with 27 wins, setting a program record for the second straight season, and won the American Athletic Conference championship, advancing to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in school history.
