DALLAS (SMU) - The SMU women's tennis team earned their third straight victory to start the season, beating Sam Houston State 7-0 at the Ann and Brad Brookshire Family Pavilion at the SMU Tennis Complex.
Reigning American Athletic Conference Female Tennis Player of the Week, Hristina Dishkova won her singles and doubles matches from the No. 1 spot to remain unbeaten to start the season. With Vaszilisza Bulgakova, they defeated SHSU's Mila Milanovic and Carrie Casey 7-5, clinching the doubles point, then Dishkova rolled over Fabienne Gettwart in singles to win 6-2, 6-0.
"After my doubles match I felt like I needed to improve my game a lot," Dishkova said. "I was trying to move my feet better, trying to stay focused the whole time, not let myself get distracted and everything went well for me."
Freshman Ana Perez-Lopez continued her winning ways in doubles, this time from the No. 3 spot with Yana Erkeeva, taking down Gettwart and Caitlyn Mitchel 6-1. Perez-Lopez also won her first singles match of the spring in quick fashion from the No. 4 spot beating Milanovic 6-2, 6-1.
"I'm very happy that I could help get this victory for our team," Perez-Lopez said. "In doubles, I think I had to adjust since I wasn't playing with my normal partner [Dasha Sharapova] but I think I did really well with Yana."
Macie Elliott and Mary Wright moved up to No. 2 doubles but their match went unfinished. Both Wright and Elliott won their singles matches, Wright (No. 5) with a 7-5, 7-5 win over Maddie Mortimore and Elliott (No. 6) with a 6-4, 7-6 (5) win over Mitchell.
Bulgakova clinched the SMU win with a 6-3, 7-5 win in singles (No. 2) over Casey and the sweep was completed when Erkeeva (No. 3) won her match over Ema Barkovic 7-5, 6-4 after being down in the second set 4-1.
The next match for the Mustangs will be on Sunday at 10 a.m. back at the SMU Tennis Complex against Montana State.
