DALLAS (SMU) - The SMU rowing team hosted a three-race event on White Rock Lake Saturday morning, coming away with a win in Varsity 4+ action over the crew from Central Oklahoma.
SMU's Varsity 4+ crew crossed the line first in 8:20.3, while UCO crossed with a time of 8:22.5.
In the 2nd Varsity 8+ race, UCO outpaced the Mustangs with a time of 7:06.13. SMU posted a time of 7:33.41. In the 1st Varsity 8+, SMU clocked its best Varsity 8 time of the season with a time of 6:48.4 for the second-place finish.
"I don't like losing races," Head Coach Doug Wright said. "Just crossing the line first I always feel like it should be us but our time today was fast and on par with where we're going heading into conference. If we look at the pure time of the 1st Varsity 8 on the water, I'm really encouraged by that and we're going to keep focusing on the time and not the outcome of the race. We'll work off that and we'll be fine."
Following the Mustangs' races, the team held a Senior Day ceremony for the program's two seniors Jo Parmer and Miranda Zsigmond.
"I'm really proud of Miranda and Jo for what they've given to the program and the legacy they've left behind," Wright said. "It's not all about how fast you were when you were there but the legacy you left behind. The other kids will remember them for who they are and it goes way beyond their athletic ability but more into what their character is like. That speaks volumes about them and what they leave behind for the team to model."
The Mustangs are back in action April 9-10 at the Knecht Cup in Mercer, N.J.
