ORLANDO, Fla. (The American/SMU) - SMU senior Markus Kennedy was named Sixth Man of the Year for the second consecutive season as the American Athletic Conference announced its specialty awards Wednesday. Kennedy helped lead No. 25 SMU to a 25-5 overall record and 13-5 conference mark, finishing second in the league.
Kennedy, a Philadelphia native, averaged 9.3 points, 4.4 rebounds and 1.2 blocks in 23.1 minutes off the bench for the Mustangs. In conference play, Kennedy averaged 6.9 rebounds (11th AAC), 1.2 blocks (T-9th AAC), 2.4 offensive rebounds (9th AAC) and shot 49.6 percent from the field (8th AAC).
Kennedy collected multiple accolades in his three years at SMU. He was named to the All-AAC Second Team and the NABC All-District Second Team in 2013-14 and 2014-15. He helped lead SMU to a 79-22 record including 50-4 at home and 40-14 in American Athletic Conference action. The Mustangs won the 2014-15 regular season and tournament titles. Kennedy was named the Most Outstanding Player of the AAC Tournament as the Mustangs clinched an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. In 2013-14, SMU finished tied for third in the league and eventually reached the NIT title game, where Kennedy was named to the NIT All-Tournament Team. In 2015-16, he was named to the Karl Malone Watch List and helped the Mustangs claim the Las Vegas Classic title.
In three seasons at SMU, Kennedy climbed near the top of several Mustang career records. He finished eighth in blocked shots (97), eighth in blocked shots average (1.1), ninth in field goal percentage (53.1), 16th in steals per game (1.2), 20th in steals (110) and 21st in rebounds (588). Kennedy also recorded 1,003 career points at SMU and is the 38th Mustang in school history to reach the 1,000 career points milestone.
Two additional Mustangs earned honors this week as Nic Moore was unanimously named to the AAC first-team and Shake Milton picked up All-Rookie Team honors. Moore was also named to the USBWA All-District VII Team.
