BRYAN, Texas (SMU) - Senior Jenny Haglund climbed 22 spots on the individual leaderboard going 2 under 70 to lead the SMU women's golf team in round two of the NCAA Bryan Regional, placing her in a tie for 24th place heading into Saturday's final round at Texas A&M Traditions Club. Haglund is one of eight players, including classmate Alexandra Rossi, tied for the 24th position with a two-round one over 145.
"Our seniors have been looking forward to this tournament, and their goal was to come here and play well and they have been focused and doing that," head coach Jeanne Sutherland said.
As a team, the No. 35 Mustangs took over the 13th spot, rising one position from their first round placement with a two-round 19 over 595. No. 11 Arizona (285-282—567) owns sole position of the lead, No. 3 UCLA (289-279—568) is second and No. 6 Georgia (285-284—569) is third.
"I think we got a little better today," Sutherland said. "Today was a good day to score low. We're trying to give ourselves the opportunity to make birdie, but we just didn't make enough putts. That's really been the story both days because our ball striking has been really solid."
En route to her round two score, Haglund fired a team-high six birdies bringing her tournament total to nine, which is tied for sixth in the 96-player field. The day's total included four on her second nine of the day.
Rossi (+1) and freshman Brigitte Dunne both posted scores of 3 over on the second 18, bringing Dunne's total to 8 over 152 and placing her in a five-way tie for 63rd.
Junior Lindsey McCurdy stands at 12 over after two rounds, while classmate Katie Page is at 14 over.
The Mustangs close out the event starting at 9 a.m. CT on hole 10 Saturday. SMU will be paired with Texas State and Indiana. Visit the tournament central page for all your event information. The top six teams and top three individuals not on advancing teams after tomorrow's final round will advance to the NCAA Championship May 20-25 in Eugene, Oregon.
"Our goal for tomorrow is to set a program record, and for everyone individually to be shooting for that record too," Sutherland added. "We're going to need to fire at pins and go low, and see if we can't get it done. It would be really nice to make our mark on the program and say that our last round was our best."
