BRYAN, Texas (SMU) - Seniors Jenny Haglund and Alexandra Rossi led the SMU women's golf team to its 13th-place finish at the NCAA Bryan Regional May 5-7 at Texas A&M's Tradition Club.
Rossi carded 4 over on the final day to put her three-day total at 5 over 221, tying her for 29th place. Haglund shot 6 over for today's round placing her tied for 35th at 7 over 223 for the tournament. Both players fired low rounds of 70 during the event.
Haglund led the team with 12 birdies placing her in a tie for the fourth most of the tournament, which included six in the second round.
"Our seniors really bought in when they came to this program and have finished with the number one and two scoring averages," head coach Jeanne Sutherland said. "They were a great class to lead the way and I think everyone behind them will be working hard to try and break their records."
No. 6 Georgia took the title, earning one of six berths for the NCAA Championship May 20-25 in Eugene, Oregon, finishing 6 under 858. No. 11 Arizona earned runner-up honors and No. 3 UCLA finished third. No. 19 Furman, No. 43 Miami and No. 29 Texas rounded out the advancing teams.
In her first NCAA Regional, American Athletic Conference Freshman of the Year Brigitte Dunne was the third individual finisher for the Mustangs carding a three-round 13 over 229. Dunne posted three birdies over the course of the tournament, giving her 79 on the year to place her fifth on the Mustangs' all-time season list.
Lindsey McCurdy, who began the event with 76 birdies as well, finished with four to mover her to fourth all-time at 80. The junior finished 15 over 231, while classmate Katie Page was 24 over 240.
UCLA's Bronte Law and Georgia's Bailey Tardy shared medalist honors at -7, and Miami's Dewi Weber finished third at -6.
"We did a lot of great things today, but erased them with big numbers," Sutherland said. "It was kind of the story of the tournament, but I think this team has raised the bar for the future."
This was the 14th overall NCAA appearance for the Mustangs, and the fourth consecutive NCAA Regional appearance. SMU finished fourth at The American Championship in April and was ranked as high as No. 27 during the 2015-16 season.
"Getting up to No. 27 in the rankings was a milestone for us, but we have to find a way to do a better job of not peaking until May," Sutherland added. "Overall, I'm really pleased with what we've done this year. We had a short squad and we've really overcome adversity."
