PROVIDENCE, R.I. (SMU/The American) - The American Athletic announced its schedule format for the 2016-17 women's basketball season today. The Mustangs will play 16 conference games, facing six league opponents twice in a home-and-home format. SMU will also have two home conference games and two road conference games, facing the remaining four opponents just once.
The Mustangs will face four-time defending NCAA champion Connecticut, Cincinnati, Houston, Memphis, Tulsa and UCF twice, while playing one match each against USF and Tulane (home), and East Carolina and Temple (away).
First-year head coach Travis Mays and the Mustangs begin the 2016-17 season in Moody Coliseum Nov. 11. SMU returns the league's Newcomer of the Year in McKenzie Adams, who led the team with 13.4 points per game, as well as all-conference selection Alicia Froling, who was one of three players in The American to average a double-double with 12.3 points and 10.6 rebound per game.
The 2017 American Women's Basketball Championship will be played March 3-6 at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Conn.
