KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (SMU) – Senior
Lindsey McCurdy closed out the final round of the Mercedes-Benz Collegiate Championship on Tuesday afternoon with a 2-over 73 bringing her three-round total to 1-under 212. The score placed her in a three-way tie for fifth place in the 81 player field. The Mustangs held steady in the seventh spot, finishing 17-over 869.
The team title went to Florida (281-289-280—850), which climbed two spots on the final day, while Illinois and Kent State (+3, 855) tied for runner-up honors. Kent State's Pimnipa Panthong finished the tournament with a third-round 1-under 70 to take medalist honors at 8-under 205.
"I think it was a solid start for us this season," Head Coach
Jeanne Sutherland said. "We're a young team, so it's good to get started and see where we're at. This gives us the ability to see what needs to happen moving forward. Overall, I think everyone really gave 100 percent."
McCurdy (68-71-73—212) fell one spot on the individual leaderboard following the second round, but secured her spot in the top five with her third-round 2-over. The Kyle, Texas, native registered a team-high nine birdies, the sixth highest total in the tournament. The fifth place finish was the best for McCurdy since achieving the same feat at the SunTrust Gator Invitational a season ago. Overall, it is her second-highest career finish behind her win at the Marilynn Smith/Sunflower Invite in 2015.
Mustang freshmen
Kenzie Wright (80-71-72—223) and
Faith Summers (78-79-72—229) each fired a 1-over 72 in the final round to contribute to the team score and lead the Ponies on the day. Wright registered four birdies in the third round, while Summers had three total and went 2-under on the front nine.
Sophomore
Brigitte Dunne was the second highest finisher for the Mustangs at 5-over 218 placing her in a tie for 23rd, and senior
Katie Page posted her low round of 70 in the second round en route to a three-round 226.
SMU is back in action on Friday for the Mason Rudolph Championship in Nashville, Tennessee. The 54-hole, three-day event is hosted by Vanderbilt.
