FRANKLIN, Tenn. (SMU) – After 18 holes of action at the Mason Rudolph Championship, the SMU women's golf team sits at even par 288, four strokes back from Northwestern and Alabama who are 4-under 284 in a tie for the lead. Freshman Faith Summers leads the Mustangs currently tied for eighth place at 1 under 71. The tournament is being held at the Vanderbilt Legends Club of Tennessee North Course.

"The team did a great job of following our game plan today, and they made great decisions," head coach Jeanne Sutherland said. "We had some putts that could have fallen, but I'm pleased with our play."

Summers went 1 under with a pair of birdies on her first nine, and closed out the day even par on the front nine of the course. This is the second collegiate event for the freshman, and her first collegiate round under par.

Classmate Kenzie Wright and sophomore Brigitte Dunne finished the first 18 at even par placing them 18th on the tournament leaderboard. Also scoring for the Mustangs was senior Lindsey McCurdy finishing her day at 1 over in a tie for 24th.

On the play of Mustang newcomers in the line-up, Sutherland had the following to say, "Faith and Kenzie are having a lot of fun playing college golf and it shows in their attitudes."

Individually, Alabama's Cheyenne Knight and Auburn's Elena Hualde lead the 81 player field at 4-under 68, while Michigan State's Sarah Burnham sits a stroke back at 3 under.

As a team, the Mustangs posted 17 birdies on the day, behind only Northwestern (19) and UCF (18).

SMU is back in action for second round play on Saturday at 10:10 a.m. CT. The Mustangs are paired with tournament leaders Northwestern and Alabama on hole No. 1.
