Mustangs Earn Runner-Up Honors At Mason Rudolph Championship

RESULTS

FRANKLIN, Tenn. (SMU) – Freshman Kenzie Wright fired a 6 under 66 to lead the SMU women's golf team in the third round of competition at the Mason Rudolph Championship. As a team, the Mustangs went 1 under on the final day for a three-round 4 over 868, good for runner-up honors at the event. Alabama, who entered the tournament No. 3 in the Golfweek rankings, finished atop the 15-team field, placing four of its golfers in the top five.

Fellow top 10 team Northwestern (No. 8) finished three strokes behind the Mustangs, and No. 14 Virginia was ninth.

"I'm really proud of this team, and they are really a fun group to coach," head coach Jeanne Sutherland said. "They have phenomenal attitudes and the whole team stepped up this weekend for a total team effort. The hole locations were tough today so being able to be one of only two teams under par was great."

Wright's impressive final round places her tied for second amongst Mustangs dating back to the 1993-94 season. Current teammate Lindsey McCurdy and 2015-16 seniors Jenny Haglund and Alexandra Rossi join the freshman with 66's in their career.

In total, Wright (72-76-66--214) finished 2 under 214 placing her in a three-way tie for eighth place posting seven of her 13 total birdies in the final round.

Classmate Faith Summers (-1, 215) finished just outside the top 10 in 11th place after carding a pair of 71's in the first two rounds and closing the event with a 2 over 73. Summers opened the final day 1 over on the front nine, but rebounded with an unblemished back nine.

"The freshmen were big contributors for us this weekend because they were able to get more comfortable and settle into the line-up," Sutherland added. "Lindsey also played solid for us all week."

Senior Lindsey McCurdy (73-71-73--217) was tied for 12th at the event, giving her a pair of top 15 finishes in the Mustangs' first two tournaments of the season. Overall, McCurdy was second on the team with 11 birdies at the event, and had one of the tournament's six eagles.

Senior Katie Page contributed the Ponies' final counting score in the third round going three over 75, and sophomore Brigitte Dunne also represented the Mustangs finishing 9 over 225.

Tournament medalist honors went to Alabama's Cheyenne Knight at 14 under 202, and notable team finishes from the American Athletic Conference included UCF (4th), Houston (10th) and Tulane (11th).

The second place finish is the highest for SMU since winning the 2016 Clover Cup in March.

The Mustangs return to action Oct. 17 & 18 for the Betsy Rawls Longhorn Invitational hosted by Texas in Austin.
