HEAD OF THE OKLAHOMA INFORMATION
DALLAS (SMU)— SMU rowing head coach
Doug Wright announced the 2016-17 schedule Friday. The Mustangs will compete in nine regattas, including three home events during the spring season.
The Mustangs compete in two head races, including the Head of the Oklahoma (Oklahoma City) on Saturday and the Head of the Brazos (Waco, Texas) on Saturday Oct. 8.
Head style racing events refer to those that involve shotgun starts and teams racing against the clock on courses approximately three miles long.
SMU will also compete in one dual race, at Tulsa on Nov. 4-5.
SMU returns to the Head of the Oklahoma this weekend after not attending last season. In the 2014-15 season, SMU posted several top finishers including the Collegiate Frosh/Novice 8+ taking first place with a 15:24.4 finish. The Mustangs will send several small boast this season including singles (1x), doubles (2x), fours (4+) and novice eights (8+).
"Part of head racing is that it in large part ties into the training we are conducting this time of year," head coach
Doug Wright said about the upcoming 5k race. "It's longer distances, slower paces, but in a more competitive environment."
Sprint races begin March 11 with the Mustangs hosting three events at White Rock Lake in Dallas. In the spring opener, SMU faces Creighton University, a squad the Mustangs have consistently raced well against. Last season, SMU placed first (7:24.4) in Varsity 8+, first (7:50.5) in Varsity 4+ and first (8:32.1) in 2nd Varsity 4+.
The Mustangs will then travel to San Diego. for the San Diego Crew Classic April 1-2. The following weekend, SMU heads to New Jersey for the Knecht Cup April 8-9, before coming back home to Dallas to host the Lawless Cup versus Tulsa, Alabama and University of Central Oklahoma in a double dual at White Rock Lake.
The American Athletic Conference Championship will be held in Sarasota, Florida Saturday May 13.
