LEWISVILLE, Texas (SMU) – Senior Matea Samardzic led the SMU women's swimming and diving team with four NCAA B cuts at the 2017 SMU Classic. The Classic featured three NCAA top 10 teams in No. 6 Michigan, No. 7 USC and No. 9 Louisville, while No. 21 UCLA and Miami were also in the field.

The altered-format SMU Classic included eight swimmers and one diver from each competing school. Swimmers had the opportunity to compete in three events per day, one of which had to be a relay. Each team entered one swimmer per heat (Consolation & Championship), while relays only had a Championship heat. Diving events consisted of six optional dives on 1- and 3-meter boards.

The Mustangs placed sixth at the event with a final score of 209. USC won the event with 331 points, while Louisville was second (330.5) and Michigan (322) third. UCLA finished fourth (239.5) and Miami was fifth (230).

The Mustangs were represented by Samardzic and fellow senior Kathleen Charron, junior El Yellin, sophomores Agata Magner and Erin Trahan and freshmen Katie Crown, Felicity Passon, Sam Smith and Lauren Thompson.

Samardzic represented the Ponies in backstroke and individual medley events, placing fourth in each event. She posted times of 54.21 in the 100-yard backstroke and 1:55.06 in the 200 distance, while clocking a 2:01.41 in the 200-yard individual medley and 4:13.72 in the 400.

Passon earned a fourth place finish in the 50-yard freestyle for her highest placement of the event, touching in a season-best 23.31. She was also second in the Consolation Final of the 100-yard butterfly with SMU's fastest time of the season at 54.52.

The Mustangs picked up their best relay placement in the 200-yard freestyle relay, finishing fifth in a time of 1:37.43.

In diving action, Crown finished fifth on 1 meter (235.75) and sixth on 3 meter (233.70).

SMU returns to action Oct. 20 at Houston and Oct. 21 at Rice before returning home for the facility-opener of the Robson & Lindley Aquatics Center and Barr-McMillion Natatorium Nov. 3 against [RV] LSU.
