TAMPA, Fla. (SMU) – After 110 minutes of action, the No. 12 SMU men's soccer team played USF to a 0-0 draw Saturday at Corbett Soccer Stadium.
SMU moved to 12-2-1 overall and 4-1-1 in American Athletic Conference play, while USF remained in third place in the league standings with a 3-1-2 record and 6-5-4 overall.
The Mustangs controlled possession most of the match outshooting USF, 28-14, including a 15-7 advantage on shots on goal.
Nicky Hernandez led the Mustangs with a match-high six shots with three on frame.
Bryce Clark and
Emil Cuello both finished with five shots, while
Garrett McLaughlin added four. McLaughlin and Clark each recorded four shots on goal and Cuello registered two on frame.
Defensively, SMU allowed 14 shots as the Mustangs backline along with goalkeeper
Michael Nelson have not surrendered a goal in five matches. Â
In the net, Nelson registered seven saves giving him 44 on the year. He earned his fifth consecutive shutout and eighth of the season.
With the draw, SMU remains in first place in the conference with Connecticut (7-6-2, 4-2 American) currently sitting in second in the league standings.
The Mustangs will host the Huskies on senior day in the regular-season finale Saturday at 8:30 p.m. SMU will have a chance to win the American Athletic Conference regular-season title outright with a win against Connecticut.
