DALLAS (SMU) – The SMU women's tennis team picked up six victories on day one of the Red and Blue Challenge Friday at the SMU Tennis Complex. The Mustangs captured two wins in doubles play, followed by four victories in singles.
Ana Perez-Lopez paired with Sarai Monarrez-Yesaki in doubles to defeat Tulsa's Ksenia Laskutova and Martha Matoula, 6-4.
Anzhelika Shapovalova and
Tiffany Hollebeck also faced the Golden Hurricane registering a 6-2 victory against Shura Poppe and Tamara Kupkova.
In singles play,
Liza Buss notched a 6-3, 6-3 win against Magdalena Stencel of Wyoming, while Perez-Lopez won a three-set match (6-5, 5-7, 6-4) against Stencel's teammate Elisa Koonik. Shapovalova and
Karina Traxler also recorded victories for the Mustangs. Shapovalova won in straight sets, 6-4, 6-1, over Wyoming's Milka Genkova and Traxler gave up just three games in her 6-3, 6-0 win against Amiru Shimoguchi of Central Arkansas.
The tournament will continue Saturday at 9 a.m. with doubles play.
