The [RV/--] SMU Mustangs (10-3) open American Athletic Conference play by hosting UCF (9-3) on Wednesday at 8 p.m. The Mustangs have won two of the last three AAC titles, sweeping the 2014-15 and 2016-17 regular season and tournament championships. SMU went 17-1 in the AAC during the 2016-17 regular season, winning the last 13 to claim the outright title. The Mustangs are 45-9 in AAC play since the start of 2014-15, the most wins in the league in that stretch.
The Mustangs are 9-0 at home this season and have won 31 straight games at Moody Coliseum, the second-longest active streak nationally. SMU is 34-0 under
Tim Jankovich at Moody Coliseum, the second-best home start by a head coach in NCAA history.
The Ponies are 10-3 on the season after finishing the non-conference slate with three straight wins, including a back-to-back versus Boise State (W, 86-63) on Dec. 18 and Cal Poly (W, 84-64) on Dec. 19. SMU's pre-conference slate included wins against then-No. 2 Arizona, 66-60, on Nov. 24 in the Battle 4 Atlantis and then-No. 14 USC, 72-55, on Dec. 2.
The Mustangs are second in The American in scoring defense at 61.1 (11th NCAA). SMU has only allowed more than 67 points in one game this season. The Mustangs lead the AAC in assists (18.3, 16th NCAA), assist-to-turnover ratio (1.5, 16th NCAA) and 3-point percentage (.432, 6th NCAA).
All five starters are averaging double-digit scoring with
Shake Milton leading the team at 17.2 (5th AAC).
Jarrey Foster averages 13.8 (14th AAC),
Ethan Chargois at 13.2 (18th AAC), Ben Emelogu 11.5 (30th AAC) and
Jimmy Whitt at 11.0.
Jahmal McMurray is averaging 14.5 points off the bench in his first two games. Emelogu is leading the NCAA in 3-point percentage at 62.5 on 35-56. SMU has five guys averaging at least 4.8 rebounds with Chargois leading the Mustangs at 5.6 per game (17th AAC), followed by Foster at 5.4 (18th AAC), Emelogu at 5.3 (20th AAC), Whitt 5.2 and Milton 4.4 per game. Milton leads the AAC at 4.8 assists per game with Whitt 3rd in the AAC at 4.5 per game and Foster tied for 15th at 3.4 per contest. All three have a 2.0 or better assist-to-turnover ratio (Foster 2.1, 2nd AAC; Whitt 2.1, 3rd AAC; Milton 2.0, 4th AAC). Chargois is one of 19 freshmen nationally averaging at least 13.0 points and 5.0 rebounds.
1000:
Shake Milton enters the game against UCF with 993 career points. He would be the 41st Mustang to reach the milestone.
MOODY/HOME COURT ADVANTAGE: SMU has lost just four games (81 contests) at home since the start of the 2013-14 season. SMU has played 75 of those games in the renovated Moody Coliseum. RECENT GAMES
(W, 84-64 vs Cal Poly on Dec. 19): SMUMustangs.com:
DALLAS (SMU) - In the season opener, just over two months ago, the Mustangs went to the locker room for halftime trailing against UMBC in Moody Coliseum. SMU stormed back in the second and won by double-figures, but head coach
Tim Jankovich urged everyone to remain patient with this year's team.
A common question of the offseason was asking how quickly this year's SMU team, that returned only the three rotation players of
Shake Milton,
Jarrey Foster, and
Ben Emelogu II, could mesh together on the court and follow the championship season of last year without the same veteran presence.
The Mustangs found its footing faster than even the coaching staff probably expected. With the Tuesday night victory against Cal Poly, SMU finished its rigorous non-conference slate with a very impressive 10-3 mark.
In just the sixth game of the season, this year's team became just the second team in school history to knock off a No. 2 ranked opponent, taking down Arizona in the Bahamas. A week later, they accomplished something even last year's team did not. SMU invited USC to Moody Coliseum and sent them back home with a convincing 17-point loss. The victory last night against Boise State was equally impressive, as the Mustangs essentially ran the Broncos out of the gym.
"I like where we are," Jankovich said. "We're not where we're going to be, and we have a lot of room for improvement. Our last several games, we're playing our best basketball. It's not good enough, and we can be better. About this this time of the year, it's important that the energy is increasing and the intensity, determination, and camaraderie are higher than they were two and a half months ago. I feel that. I felt it last year. I feel it this year."
A big reason for the team's growth is because the question marks at the beginning of the season have faded. Milton, Foster, and Emelogu have been as advertised, if not even better than the high bar that was set for them. Emelogu, in particular, has more than doubled his 3-point percentage from last year, becoming an added weapon on the offensive end with his deadeye shooting.
"If you look at Ben last year, he just started slow. He didn't end slow," Jankovich said. "The goal he's shooting at is just bigger than other people's. It's so fun for me to see because he's such a great young man. He's a giver, and all he wants to do is win. He just wants to win and he shoots to win."
However, it was going to take more than those three for this team to be successful. Sitting out last season after his transfer,
Jimmy Whitt has transitioned nearly flawlessly into Jankovich's system. He embraces the defensive end of the ball, and the ball handling combo of Milton and Whitt give the Mustangs extreme flexibility on offense. Whitt has really found his groove shooting too, draining 41 of his 53 shots over the last six games.
The Mustangs found an extremely talented big man in
Ethan Chargois, as well. The freshman has already been named conference Rookie-of-the-Week twice and is skilled for a guard, let alone a 6-9 big man. His range offensively extends well beyond the 3-point range, and he's more than capable of putting the ball on the ground.
It's a small sample size, but it appears like the Mustangs found a spark plug bench scorer as well in
Jahmal McMurray. He provided a big lift with his 16 points off the bench in his first game as a Mustang against Boise.
"We're starting to find our identity as a team," Foster said. "All of the pieces are starting to fall together and the puzzle is coming together. I like the way it's looking. We're talking more. As a team, we're helping each other out."
UP NEXT: SMU hosts USF on New Year's Eve at 7 p.m. before road games at Tulane (Jan. 4) and at Cincinnati (Jan. 7).
THE SERIES VS. UCF (10-6+): SMU and UCF will meet for the 17th time. SMU expanded its winning streak over UCF after sweeping the 2016-17 season series. SMU won 65-60 on Jan. 25, 2017, before topping the Knights 70-59 in the American Athletic Conference Tournament semifinal game on March 11, 2017. The series started in 2005 when the two schools were members of Conference USA. The Mustangs are 6-1+ in Dallas against UCF and 2-4+ in Orlando. (+8-6 officially all-time, 5-1 home; 1-4 away; wins in 2013-14 later vacated)
LAST MEETING VS. UCF (W, 70-59 at XL Center on March 11): HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) --
Sterling Brown scored 22 points as the 12th-ranked Mustangs beat UCF 70-59 in the AAC semifinals.
Semi Ojeleye added 17 points, and
Shake Milton had 14 of his 16 points in the second for SMU, which is back in the championship game after missing last year's tournament because of NCAA sanctions. The Mustangs won the title in 2015. SMU has won 25 of its last 26 after a 4-3 start to their season. B.J. Taylor had 20 points and Nick Banyard 16 for the Knights (21-11). They had won six in a row. Neither team led by more than six before Milton stole the ball from the 7-foot-6 Tacko Fall under the UCF basket and made the Knights pay on the other end with a 3-pointer for a 42-34 lead. Taylor was trying to signal for a timeout that led to a technical foul and
Sterling Brown extended the lead to 10 with two free throws. That was part of a 14-3 run that gave the Mustangs a 50-36 lead and control of the game with just over 9 minutes to play. Taylor tried to shoot UCF back into the game. He hit consecutive 3-pointers that cut the lead to eight points with 3 minutes left, but that was as close as the Knights would get. Ojeleye had 10 of the Mustangs' 26 points first-half points and SMU went into halftime leading by just three. Taylor had eight for UCF and hit the first 3-pointer of the second half to tie the game at 26. Both teams hit 10 3-point shots, but neither could score inside, each getting just 10 points in the paint. SMU finished with 15 assists on its 21 baskets, five of them from Milton. (W, 65-60 at CFE Arena on Jan. 25): ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) --
Shake Milton scored 19 points,
Semi Ojeleye added 14, and [RV/RV] SMU beat UCF 65-60.
Ben Moore scored 14 and
Sterling Brown made three 3-pointers for his 100th career trey for the Mustangs. Trailing 35-26 at halftime, UCF closed to 60-56 with 49 seconds left to play after B.J. Taylor's back-to-back jumpers. SMU led 62-56 after Milton's two free throws but Tacko Fall dunked to make it 62-58.
Ben Emelogu II's two free throws put SMU up 64-58 with 28 seconds left, then Taylor made a layup and the Knights trailed by four. Milton iced it with two free throws and Taylor missed a 3 before time expired. Taylor scored 22 and Matt Williams added 14 for UCF (14-6, 5-3), including his 221st trey to rank second in the school record book. Fall grabbed 12 rebounds and scored 10, including a first-half dunk that was so hard his goggles fell off, and had five blocks.
HEAD COACH TIM JANKOVICH... is in his second season at the helm at SMU after four seasons as the associate head coach. He is in his 35th season as a collegiate coach, and his 13th as a head coach. The Mustangs went 25-5, finishing the season ranked No. 24 after reaching a high of No. 8. In 2014-15, the Mustangs claimed the AAC regular season and tournament championships en route to the NCAA Tournament. SMU was the top seed in the 2014 NIT, reaching the title game. As a head coach, he is 206-129 (.615) [49-8 at SMU (.860), including 34-0 at Moody Coliseum].
That includes a 104-64 mark at ISU where his teams recorded four top-three finishes in the Missouri Valley, reached the conference tournament final three times and earned four NIT bids.
