PALM COAST, Florida (SMU) – Sophomore
Brigitte Dunne tied her season-low round carding a 4-under 68 and sits second after the first round to lead the 39
th-ranked SMU women's golf team at the American Athletic Conference Championship. The three-day event is taking place at the Hammock Beach Resort Conservatory Course and runs through Tuesday.
Dunne, who earned Freshman of the Year honors following the 2016 tournament, fired five birdies on the first 18 holes, including going 2-under on the final three holes to secure sole possession of second place. The sophomore improved on her best round from last season's event by three strokes to open 2017 play.
"Brigitte went out there and followed her game plan and had a good day of golf," head coach
Jeanne Sutherland said.
As a team, the Mustangs are tied for second with No. 44 Houston at 2-over 290. No. 28 UCF leads the nine-team field at 4-under 284. Houston's Leonie Harm sits atop the individual leaderboard at 6-under 66.
"I think we had a good plan and worked really hard to follow it as a team," Sutherland added. "We had our fair share of birdies, but did have a few tough holes. Overall, everyone went out and fought hard. Heading out tomorrow we just need to keep with that plan and play smart golf."
Freshman
Faith Summers sits just outside of the top 10, in a four-way tie for 11th place. Summers went even-par 72 on day one with a pair of birdies and an unblemished front nine.
Senior
Lindsey McCurdy and freshman
Ana Paula Ramirez finished the first day 3-over 75 and are tied for 20th, while freshman
Kenzie Wright shot 4-over 76, placing her tied for 24th.
The Mustangs continue action Monday in the top pairing with Houston and UCF, teeing off at 8:40 a.m. CT.
