PALM COAST, Florida (SMU) – The SMU women's golf team fired the day's low round on Tuesday, going 5-under 283, to secure runner-up honors at the 2017 American Athletic Conference Championship on the Conservatory Course at the Hammock Beach Resort in Palm Coast, Florida. SMU finished the three-day event with a season-best 1-under 863, while sophomore
Brigitte Dunne posted a career-high, second-place finish at 6-under 210.
SMU's third-round 5-under was the second-lowest round shot at the tournament, and was also one stroke off the tournament record, posted by Houston in Sunday's second round.
"We really had a good day out there today," head coach
Jeanne Sutherland said. "I'm really proud of their effort and attitude. All of them fought hard and played good golf."
UCF won the nine-team event, going 4-under 860, while the Knights' Ashley Holder earned medalist honors at 7-under 209. SMU was seven shots out of second heading into Tuesday, but a pair of 69s, a round low, from Dunne and
Lindsey McCurdy helped the Mustangs climb into the second position.
Dunne (68-73-69--210), who was one of only two individuals who fired a pair of rounds in the 60s, posted four birdies and an unblemished front nine on the final day. Overall, Dunne led the Mustangs with 13 birdies, the third highest individual total at the event.
"Brigitte played great, solid golf all tournament," Sutherland said. "She gave it a good run there at the end with birdies on 16 and 17, and [assistant coach] Dave [Von Ins] coached her really well leading down that stretch."
Freshman
Faith Summers (72-70-71--213) picked up her first collegiate top-five performance, finishing in a two-way for fourth with UCF freshman Maria Balcazar. After missing a good portion of the season due to injury, Summers jumped into the top five, ending the tournament with all three rounds at par or better, and tied her season-high for birdies at nine.
"I'm really proud what Faith and all of our freshmen have done," Sutherland added. "They've learned a lot this season and keep getting better. It's been really fun to watch them mature."
McCurdy (75-73-69--217) was the third Mustang to crack the top 10, climbing five spots in the final round with her third round in the 60s this season to finish tied for eighth. McCurdy fired a 69 Tuesday, including four birdies on the front nine to bring her program-leading total to 99 this season. The senior also leads the team with all 31 of her rounds counting towards the Mustangs' team score this year.
"Today was a good day for Lindsey," Sutherland added. "She's been playing steady golf all week, but today she was able to make the putts fall."
Posting a season-best finish at the tournament was freshman
Ana Paula Ramirez (75-74-74--223). Ramirez tied for 21st, finishing 7-over. Freshman
Kenzie Wright also competed at the Championship, but withdrew after two rounds due to injury.
"I like where we're at right now, we're ready for Regionals coming up in a few weeks," Sutherland concluded.
The Mustangs await selection for NCAA Regionals, which takes place Thursday, April 27 at 11 a.m. ET/10 a.m. CT on the Golf Channel. Four Regional sites span the country including Athens, Columbus, Lubbock and Albuquerque, with competition running May 8-10.
