MISHIMA, Japan (SMU) – SMU women's golf completed its first round of the season with round one of the Pan Pacific Super League in Japan. The team sits in eighth place.

"It wasn't the start we were hoping for, but there's still plenty of golf left," said fifth-year head coach Lauren Mason. "We saw a lot of encouraging stretches today and showed great fight on our back nine. With two rounds remaining, there are plenty of positives to build on, and I'm confident this talented group can climb the leaderboard and put us in contention."
 
The Mustangs are in the midst of a historic trip to Japan to begin their season. The team is spending a week overseas culminating in this season-opening tournament. Competing against some of the best teams from around the world, SMU holds eighth place. Starting the day with the back nine, SMU shot 12-over among the first nine holes before responding with a two-under on the final nine.
 
Celine Chen and Grace Jin led the Mustangs with a two-over, 73 on the par-71 course. Chen excelled on the final nine holes, shooting a 34 to vault her into a tie for 39th. She birdied three of her final six holes. Jin, a junior transfer from Sam Houston State, shot 38 on the first nine holes followed by 35 on the front in her first round as a Mustang.
 
Mackenzie Lee and Emily Odwin sit one shot back in 55^th place. They both carded a 74 on the day. Lee came to life on the final nine holes. The North Little Rock, Arkansas native birdied three times in the nine holes without a bogey. Odwin didn't have a bogey in her first 12 holes on her way to a three-over score. Yoonjeong Huh shot a 84 to round out the Mustang starting five. She sits in 122^nd.
 
Two Mustangs are competing as individuals. Jingan (Annie) Huang and Uma Bergner each shot a 77. They hold 92^nd place.
 
The Mustangs return for the middle round on Thursday. Tee times for SMU begin at 9:10 a.m. Thursday morning in Japan, 7:10 p.m. on Wednesday in central time.
