TEMPE, Ariz. (SMU) – The SMU women's golf team finished seventh in the 14-team field at the PING/ASU Invitational at the ASU Karsten Golf Course in Tempe, Arizona. Individually,
Lindsey McCurdy continued to lead the Mustangs with her seventh top-10 finish in 10 tournaments this season. The senior finished the event with a three-round 2-under 214 to tie for eighth place.
The Mustangs posted a 54-hole 14-over 878. No. 5 Arizona State never fell out of the top spot, registering a tournament-record 25-under 839. No. 17 Arizona finished second at 5-under 859, while Washington was third with a three-day even-par 864.
"Overall we are playing good golf," head coach
Jeanne Sutherland said. "We do need to figure out how to play a tough hole, but I like our direction heading into postseason."
McCurdy (71-71-72--214) carded her 18th round of par or better this season on Sunday (E, 72) after going even on the front nine with a pair of birdies, and matching that birdie total to close out the second nine. Overall, McCurdy posted a season-high 12 of the Mustangs' 39 birdies, the fifth highest individual total of the tournament. Her 91 birdies this season also rank first on SMU's all-time list for a single season since the start of the 1993-94 season.
McCurdy also heads into the Ponies' championship season with all 28 of her rounds counting toward SMU's team score this season. She is the first Mustang to record this feat with over 28 or more rounds played since Kate Anderson (30 rounds) did the same during the 2006-07 season.
Freshman
Kenzie Wright (71-75-72--218) and sophomore
Brigitte Dunne (72-75-72--219) both shot even-par 72 on the final 18 to finish tied for 21st and tied for 25th, respectively. Dunne's 11 birdies this tournament and Wright's nine, bring their season total to 84 each, good for a tie for third on SMU's all-time single-season list.
Freshman
Ana Paula Ramirez closed out the event with her best round of the weekend, carding a 2-over 74, which included four of her five total birdies, to give her a three-day total of 15-over 231 to finish tied for 66th. Classmate
Faith Summers went 4-over on Sunday to finish 13-over 229, tied for 61st.
ASU took the top two spots with Roberta Liti earning medalist honors at 10-under 206, and Monica Vaughn finishing second at 9-under 207.
